Inconsistent Foal
-
Hi, I bred two horses I got from the perfect foundation herd helper, and the foal came out inconsistent. Is it worth it to keep it? Would it pass on its inconsistency to its foals if I were to breed it?
-
I think you should keep them for show horses. At least that what i was told.

Some people are more concerned about consistency than others. It can be passed on (I think) and can effect wether foals pass SMA as well as their showing career. I'm not sure because I've been more concerned with paper levels and PT scores, but I imagine that now I have enough mares that I am trying to pair down I'll be running consistency tests soon and use incosictency as another thing to cull on.

An inconsistent horse is a bit more likely to pass on inconsistency to a foal than a consistent horse, especially when bred to another inconsistent horse. However, inconsistent horses can and do have consistent foals, although I suspect that they are a bit more likely to be at the +/- 2 level that tests Consistent, thought that isn't certain.
As you have seen, two perfectly consistent horses can and do sometimes produce inconsistent foals. So, we can conclude that there is a degree of randomness when the die is rolled for consistency.
If you have an inconsistent horse that is unlucky and has its score swing down more often than it swings up, it can be rather disappointing in the show ring. However, some inconsistent horses are fairly lucky and their score swings up often enough to give them a decided advantage in their classes on those lucky days.
So, can inconsistent horses be good show horses? Indeed they can. I did a search on all my horses based on lifetime points. Here is the Number 3 horse. A 19 year old 3rd gen spayed mare, inconsistent, with a PT score of 10, lowered by her inconsistency. She's showing in the upper half of 7W.
Lifetime points: 2674
Lifetime Profits: 3412hbs

Inconsistency also brings down your PT. :)

Agreed. I do more genetic modification to make foals that pass all testing consistent than I do to give horses different colors or patterns.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
