You're having trouble with money because you have no show stock to speak of. Show horses are where you make your money in this game, breeding is just the fun part. I would say that at least half your stock should be geldings and spayed mares - they train a bit better than the same horse that's unaltered and will go farther because of it.

It does take time to build a good show string - you need time for them to age up. And you always need to keep adding to it as the horses age.
