How much of a difference does pasture breeding make?
-
As a pretty new (read: broke) member I'm trying to decide if pasturing my horses now will make that much of a difference if I plan to breed them April 3rd or 4th.
How long do horses need to be pastured for their foals to receive a "better ability"? Or does it just increase with time, finitely or otherwise? What is that 'better ability'? Better show horses? Better breeders?
I cannot show or train pastured horses, can I? So I am losing out on pointing them while they're in there, right? -
Pasture breeding will always have better outcomes. It takes 30 days for the mares in a pasture to reach full pasture bonus. If you put your mares in pasture, you can fill your barns with show ponies.Thanked by 1strawroan

Does the length of time the stallion is in the pasture have an effect?
Could I theoretically put a handful of mares in, and then throw in the stallion when I'm ready to breed? Can I select which stallion breeds which mares or if I click 'breed my pastures' will the mares all be bred at once by the same stallion?
I still only have one pasture so trying to plan this out. -
Stallions don't get pasture bonus so can be moved in and out at any time. It is completely random as to which stallion breeds with each mare. Clicking 'breed my pastures' will cause all your mares to be bred by the same stallion if there's only one in the pasture or at random if you have more than one :D
Sorry for the info dump! -
Here's a little bit more about how it works, as I understand it.
Each stallion and each mare, depending on their breeding ability, has a range of potential contributions to the foal's breeding ability and the foal's showing ability--two entirely separate ranges of numbers.
When you breed two horses, the program randomly selects a number from the stallion's range, a number from the mare's range, combines them with another random factor. The average of those numbers is the breeding ability or the showing ability for the foal.
For every day your mare remains in the pasture, up to 30 days, a little bit more of the bottom of her potential contribution for each ability is hidden. This results in her contribution to the foal's ability coming progressively from higher in her potential range.
Ammit never gives us the exact numbers involved. Just like breeding horses in real life, there is considerable variability in the potential results of every breeding.
If I've got something wrong here, I expect Ammit will come and correct me. :DDe gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Here is a link to an experiment that Ammit did showing the results of the pasture bonus and breeding horses with even and uneven breeding ability: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/18836/a-working-example-of-uneven-breeding-and-pasture-bonuses-#Item_7
Pastured horses can still be trained, and if they have any show points they do still contribute to your daily showing bonus, they just can't be shown. This is a game that rewards patience. You need to balance the long term goal of getting better foals who will have the potential to eventually earn you more show points with the short term goal of having all your mares earning show points now.I was jllewis on the old forum.
