Sell or keep
  • image

So I just created a horse. I tested him and he got gelded. Should I keep him and make him a show horse or sell him?
  • I'm new so will be following this. My cousin plays this and told me to not keep anything that gets gelded or spayed, She's a fussy so an so though. My only advice would be if you think he'll make a good show horse then keep.
  • In this game, although breeding is certainly fun and learning about horse color genetics is fascinating, the way a stable makes money so that it can keep on having fun breeding is to have a very large herd of neutered show horses.

I have seen proposed ratios that range from 3 neutered horses to 1 intact horse to 10 neuters to 1 intact.

Anyway, whether you start keeping large numbers of neuters or not, DO show all of your horses regularly, whether intact or not (unless you have placed them in the pasture, where they can't be shown.

De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

  • Remember the difference between a PROVEN show horse and a POTENTIAL show horse.

A Proven horse already has the points and will add to your showing bonus tonight. As soon as you move a proven show horse into your barn, that evening, at rollover you will get extra cash (depending on how many points the horse has. The more points, the more cash.)

A Potential show horse could be great, but right now has few or no points and can't help your showing bonus tonight. It may help you out in a couple of months, especially if it has a high PT score. The question is whether or not you have the stall space and funds to wait for it to start earning. If you do, it can't hurt to keep the horse. If you don't, and you find a better horse at the auction, or for sale, that has more points, I would sell the lower pointed horse in favor of the proven horse.

  • I was told to show them all but sell the neutered ones and the ones that are poor in the shows. Which is ok when you have a large established barn, like my cousin (did). I was lucky that she's selling all her heavies and moving onto lighter horses so I bought her good showers off her before anyone else could get them. Its all down to experience and learning I suppose.
  • Yep! Practice makes perfect!

  • On a follow up from what Confluence said, I no longer keep created horses that are spayed and gelded, usually because they're 4 years old. I keep at least 2 of every altered foals that I breed every season, because while both horses have the potential to become great showers, the foals will have more opportunity to earn more points due to them starting their showing at half the age of the created ones.
I would say if your breeding stock isn't doing well showing wise, then don't sell them and just not worry about where they place in the shows. I have a RS who, up until last Sunday, was placing mostly dead last in every comp she was in! But I never once thought of selling her, because she'll be a good producer (and is hom DP)

    Prices are almost always negotiable.
