As far as I'm aware Sandy is right. However, Rits is also partially right in that it's very much the luck of the draw which horses go into which classes in the same level and therefore you might have a horse who has a lucky class and places first one day and then places towards the bottom the next day in the same level class with the same score.

Luck plays a big role in your week to week prize money earnings, but what is important with showing is to build up a large herd of show ponies and Train and show them all every week. What you want is your overall show points to grow, as that is what your daily show bonus payment is based on. Many older players earn millions of hbs a week just from their show bonus.
