What colour is my mare?
-
She's registered chestnut. Is this a modifier, or regular chestnut variation?
-
I'm also awful with RL horses, but I have to be honest she doesn't really look chestnut to me? TBH, I've not really seen a chestnut in person with such a dark mane/tail. I'd probably say she was more like a wild bay with weirdly light points or something. Either way, pretty horse!#4519

She's beautiful! Here's a link that may help. She looks like a Sooty Chestnut to me sorta.

I hope this link helps. I'm usually ok with IRL horse colors but she's a little odd looking and I'm not looking at her in person. -
I keep going back between wild bay and some weird chestnut. Those dark spots on her lower legs are throwing me off.
She does have quite a bit of dappling. I'll try to get better pictures. She was feeling very "Thoroughbred" today because of the storm coming in, so I gave her a quick brush and put her back. -
She's a cutie! Do you know what color her parents are? Is it possible she could be buckskin? I know a few buckskins who have similar legs and two-toned manes/tails.
Some registries have very limited/inaccurate colors (looking at you, Jockey Club) because so little was understood about colors when the breed registries were written. UC Davis offers a color panel genetic test for about $100, if you're really, really curious. -
I'm still waiting on her papers. Hopefully if I can find her parents' colours, I can figure out what she is.
I might get her colour tested when the dollar is better. $100 US is quite a bit more in Canadian right now!
Apparently she was quite chestnut in her racing days. She won one race, so I'm waiting on that photo as well so I can see what colour she used to be!Thanked by 1Riata -
Registered TB? If you know her official Jockey Club name you can do a pedigree search (Google pedigree query and you will get the site) which will at least let you know what the likely Base color of her parents was.
-
Chestnut.
You can have her tested to find out for sure if you want to. -
Cheers - I don't know why I didn't try to search her on pedigree query instead of just googling her name lol. Nothing came up when I googled so I assumed she had never been entered.
She's by a chestnut, out of a black. Doesn't narrow much down.
Triple Spiral - what modifier do you think she has, if any? I've never seen a "regular" chestnut with such a dark mane and tail. -
I'm so glad you posted this! My mare is almost identical in coloring and I was wondering the same thing! She is also registered as a sorrel but her mane and tail are so dark they're almost black.
Since I have her papers and have obsessed over her breeding at least a thousand times I know where her coloring is coming from. Her sire is a het black stallion by the name of Profit Increase.
Several of Opal's paternal half siblings have the same dark mane and tail.
I seem to have lost the picture of her dam, but she was a very dark bay. -
This horse is a dark chestnut that is sun-bleached/copper burnt. With access to a lose mineral with proper copper levels she would probably be as dark as the mane and tail.

I had a Thoroughbred that looked like this when I bought him after he finished racing - I added minerals to his feed plus having a block for him to lick when he pleases, alongside adding Livamol. He has started to come up a gorgeous shiny liver colour to match his mane/tail, despite his winter coat starting to come through! I have only had him about a month too.
Before events I will start him on Cacoliv, which is an iron/copper paste to really boost their coat and overall condition.
I have also heard cooked pumpkin can help darken and get the lovely rich chestnut colour.AztecArabians

Ooh, thanks everyone! I just got her five days ago. She has access to a mineral block and is currently on grass, but I'll look into the block's copper level and see if she needs more.
-
Most mineral blocks are not sufficient as horses simply can not consume enough minerals from them to get much benefit. Mostly they just get salt from them. A lose mineral is far superior. :)
