Does this guy have DP?
-
Do you think this guy has a hidden DP gene? He only has one E gene wouldn't two EE genes make him black if he didn't have DP? And he looks like he has a brownish liver color to him but has no Sty witch is weird that he is so dark I would check him if I had a GMT but I don't have one right now

It only takes one E an no A to make a black. Black can carry dp, I think the only way to make sure would be experimental breedings.
-
Well if he does not have DP I want to add it to him before I breed him I think I'm going to get a GMT and see if I can add DP to him if not then he already has the gene
-
It's pretty much impossible to tell if a black horse has DP just by looking at it. If you look at the black horses in the Sooty/DP section of the genetics guide you can see that they all look basically identical whether or not they have sooty and/or DP. Personally, if you want to use your boy to breed a line of all black horses, I don't really see the point in adding DP to him because his black foals won't look any different if they have DP. If you want to use him to breed colors like bay, brown, or chestnut than that's a different story.

Also, DP costs 10 GMTs a pop. He also has no sooty alleles, in order to really make him worth your time md effort I would suggest making him hom sooty and hom DP. Otherwise, like Windward said, no point to it.
If you just slap a single DP to him the chances of his goals getting the DP as well as expressing it is pretty slim----

Starfire before you spend GMTs on this guy, what are you using him to breed for? As the others have said, Black horses don't express DP or sooty. If you want to breed him for liver, you would be best off not only adding 2 sooty alleles, 1 DP or more but also changing him from black to chestnut (ee). If you want to breed him for black, there is no reason to mess with any of his darkening genes. And if you are just looking for a random sire, DP could be fun but it's hard to pin on bays and chestnuts that aren't already sooty.

What I am seeing on my computer monitor is a dark gray background with black stripes, which is his brindle expression. He does not look brown at all, to me. Making him homozygous EE probably would not make much difference, except, perhaps by changing the appearance of his brindle pattern. It would not make him blacker, unless the brindle was even more minimally expressed than it is now.
Extension is a complete dominant gene. That means that if a horse has homozygous recessive agouti to make him bay (as he does) and no dilution genes like Cream, Pearl, Dun, Silver, or Champagne, there will be no visual difference between a horse that is homozygous EE and one that is heterozygous Ee. The result is a completely black horse in either case.
Since DP only affects red pigment (recessive extension or e), adding it to a black horse will make no difference in color because it has no red hair.
Black horses can carry DP, so if you breed him to a Liver Chestnut mare and get a black Liver Chestnut foal you can be sure he is carrying it.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Sandy, homozygous recessive agouti is black, not bay. :)

Sorry I forgot to say I was changing him to ee for a chocolate palomino pearl hom DP coat he already has one copy of DP without the black he is liver chestnut until I add the Kitm cream and pearl..but he didn't have DP I have to add another copy for him to be hom :)
-
Oh and I added sty sty :)
-
Wow! He's really stunning, now.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thank you he is not even done yet :)
-
He is looking great!
-
Thank you I can't wait until he is finished!:)
-
He is so gorgeous! Ooh you should make him satin instead of kit m and pearl *drools* Although he'd need to be hom satin for it to show but you can get one hom satin horse for the number of GMTs as 2 het Kit m horses. He'll be really good looking either way!
-
It's 40 GMT for each copy's of satin and kite I just really love Kitm although satin would be cool to :D
