Basic Upgrade or Barn?
-
So I've been trying to save up hbs to buy a basic upgrade. Unfortunately I keep running out of barn room, and since my show bonus is so low, I can't really afford to just let the account sit with full stalls and wait to make enough money because it would take RL years lol.
So my dilemma is this - do I keep using my money to buy barns (usually the 15 stall ones because that's all I can afford) and forego the upgrade for at least several months, or do I keep trying to save my money for the upgrade and figure out some way to make my current barn space work? I can either just try to make do with no room, which I feel like would take forever to save up the money for the upgrade, or do I harshly sell a bunch of my horses to make room? I'm not necessarily super attached to many of my horses but they're pretty much all good quality (Perfect Foundations, Top Notch Producers, Rank Specials, etc.).
Any advice from those of you who've come before would be really appreciated! -
I'd say basic upgrade. While barns get you more room, the basic upgrade more than doubles your weekly allowance from 5000 to 12500. It also provides you with a 75 stall primary barn. Assuming your primary is the standard twenty, that's more than 3 extra 15 stall barns. Since you're pretty much getting a point a week, extra barns will come rather easily after, assuming you conserve your funds and don't go crazy.
I had that dilemma as well but it seemed like I wasn't getting anywhere buying barns and trying to determine the breeding quality of my horses by hand was getting very old. I have 6 extra barns, all full, and The only reason I was able to reach a 3000 show bonus was because of horses I snagged from AtA.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder. -
I just upgraded literally hours ago and I say its well worth it already. I used real money for the 3 month basic upgrade, it was only $10.#28036

One way to make some money without selling all your good stock is to put your mares up for public breeding at 1000 hbs (more for ExPros and the more popular RSs) a pop. They may not all be used right away but they will be used by the end of the season, plus you won't be trying to make room for the foals and everyone will be in stalls so they can be adding to their points and your show bonus.

I have the basic upgrade on HJ1, which is why I know it's definitely something I want here - it's just a matter of affording it with Hajibucks lol.
I contemplated doing that Cheers, but found that I made more money by breeding them myself in pastures and then auctioning off the foals. That of course requires some room for the foals, but I've been making do. I kept some of the ones that passed Breeding Advice but I'm actually thinking that I'm getting into dire enough straights right now that I'll have to sell them for the stall room and the money.
It's just rather slow going - I can't collect show horses to really increase my show bonus without the stall room for them, but as has been pointed out, the basic upgrade is really well worth it and not just because it's basically the equivalent of like 2-3 barns. I just feel like it's a goal that's going to be very far off. -
I would just ask how far away are you? If you're almost there than keep doing that. If you're a ways away then I would buy a 15 (or even 30) stall barn, get purposefully not good/pretty create mares, breed them and auction the foals, and the mares. If you can get 15 extra spaces, then pasture breed, and auction them both. Then every 45,000$ you have turns into 75,000 which adds up fast. And you can do that every week. However as people have said the upgrade is Extremely helpful if you can get it. Large pasture, larger barn, larger allowance, you get more freedom, and having the upgrade is cool. I also did putting my mares for public breeding. People will pay more than you think if it matches their program. Then at the end of the season for the ones that people didn't care for that much you can do an end of season sale.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Get the upgrade first, sell your altered foals in the auctions for now and save some hbs, THEN buy more barns. That's what I did.
-
How many altered foals are you keeping a season? If I get a foal that is altered, I look at it and decide if it's pretty enough to keep for a show pony. If not, I don't genetic or pt test the foal and throw it straight into auction. That way, if I bred it without pasture, I'll get at least 1,500hbs and if I did it in the pasture, I get 2,000hbs. I also limit myself to how many foals I'll keep per season. I wont go above 5.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
I'm pretty far away - I have 7 IVs bought already, and can probably buy another few (once the auction's run).
I don't keep any altered foals, and I've decided to sell my intact foals from this season, so the only foals I'll have kept will be the intacts from my second season. I really don't keep anything other than the exceptionals/Rank Specials I've been creating this event, and before that I made a bunch of PFs, TNPs, etc. which I use to breed and then sell the foals from.
It sounds like most people think I should try to get the upgrade, so I think I'll keep going with that goal for now and see how it goes.
