Why does this horse have red in her name?
  • I'm just curious to why this mare and her dad have red in her name instead of liver chestnut what gene is causing the red? Thanks in advance :)

  • She has pangare and flaxen as well.
  • It's because she's roan.
  • @StarfireAcres, as fj1482 said, when a horse has roan or dun the base needs to be clarified hence the "blue roan" or "bay dun" etc.

By the way, wow she is gorgeous!

  • I definitely read "name" as "mane"...woops! :))

  • It's because her base color is Red Roan. If she hadn't inherited roan from her sire, then her base color would have been chestnut and she'd be a liver chestnut. Now, why we call them Red Roans instead of Chestnut Roans and Blue Roans instead of Black Roans is a mystery to me lol. But that's the naming convention that's been around for a long time, probably before people knew that Blue Roans were just black horses that had roan and Red Roans were just chestnuts with Roan.

  • Oh cool thank you everyone that makes sense the roan is making her a red liver :)
  • She is a stunner :)
  • Thank you she is one of my favorite 2 year olds I have :)
  • Way back in the 50's, when I was first exploring the world of horses in books (as a city girl, I had little contact with the real thing), a chestnut roan was called a Strawberry Roan and a Bay Roan was called a Red Roan. Imagine my surprise when I started playing this game and discovered a Red Roan is now a chestnut and a bay roan is simply a Bay Roan. :D

It didn't take me long to adjust, though.

  • To bad none of her foals are allowed to be sold/ don't want to be sold because, boy, I would love to add that color to my Appys!
    P.S
    She is simply gorgeous !!
  • You can add that color to your appys by breeding for it, that mare doesn't have any closed or limited edition genes. She's a black liver chestnut (hom DP and hom sooty) with a flaxen mane and tail (hom recessive flaxen) and the lighter color on her legs, belly, and muzzle is caused by pangare. That mare is DPDP StySty ff Pp. If she was hom Pangare she would be even lighter on her belly and legs.
  • Here are some more examples of that kind of color. I've been trying to breed some horses like that because I think the color is absolutely stunning.

  • My mare is frame as well with W20 and of course roan and Pangare DP DP sty sty :) and thanks everyone I love her very much and yes it's a bummer I can't sell her foals but you can make your own coat bluejumpingbean :)
  • Don't forget she is red based, so therefore red is going to be in her name at times. :)
  • Yes true I forgot to say that :D
  • They're not too difficult to breed but by god does it hurt when they get spayed!

  • Yes it does hurt when they get spayed but the ones that do make it are more special :) and those girls are very beautiful
