Is it worth it?
  • So I just got this beautiful boy, exactly what I wanted in color, PT score isn't horrible, and he papered A but came up as inconsistent and didn't pass SBA. Would it be worth it to do some GMT work on him or is the testing spot on and I shouldn't worry about it as disappointing as it is?

Here is the link to his page:

  • I would assume it cause he is a low A or not as good as his sire.
Unless you boost him he will always fail SBA

  • I would try crossing those two again next month before spending the effort on boosting him. Those are nice parents, so they should keep giving you good quality foals. You have a statistical 75% chance of getting LpLp again with that cross. Leave the dam in your pasture for 30 days (since she was just created today, she had no pasture bonus) and your July foal should be even better!

  • He's a low A but an A of any level is always at least slightly better than a B of any level. Unless your Diamond Age is boosted, he's a low to mid B, not a high one.

I would be tempted to GMT him to consistency and try again. But that could be a very expensive venture....3 GMT tokens and no guarantee....

If he was mine I would probably put him in a holding barn and repeat the cross next season. If the new foal doesn't pass or doesn't get the colors you want or is a filly (such that it's going to cost more GMTs to fix that foal to what you want than it would to try with this colt) then I would probably risk making him consistent and intact and sending him back through testing with all your fingers and toes crossed. But with any luck the new foal will be equally perfect for your line and intact and this guy can go live in your show barn!

In any case, I recommend putting your favorite foals through PT before SBA and considering GMTing them to be consistent if needed and if you are in love...(paper first if you're unsure of quality). It's cheaper to do extra early testing on a foal than it is to spend GMTs to "unalter" them!
  • Aren't diamond age stallions C papered perfect foundations? I thought only the Nanotechs were boosted but the original diamond ages are not, and the sire is an original. If this is the case, you got an A papered colt from C X Red parents, which is pretty good, especially because you don't own the site and you got this colt by hand breeding and not pasture breeding. I'd be willing to bet that SBA gelded him because of his inconsistency. I don't see how there's any way an A papered colt from C X Red parents could have been gelded because he's not as good as his parents. He's probably a low A papered and would test about as good as a high B papered colt, but the ex pro foundations are only mid range B/Red and not high.
  • Yep you're right!
