White factor questions
-
How does white factor work? I've been working on an all black horses. I want them to be completely black with no white at all. I have Bring Back The Sun RS stallions and a few mares as well that make up the herd. How does white factor get passed on? I want to end up with black horses with a white factor of None. I have a few horses in my 2nd gen that have a WF of none but none of them currently have come out of my black herd. I need to have a better handle on how WF is passed on to the next generation.

All I know is that frame and splash increase it....Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

No frame or splash in this herd just good old fashion black.

I got this from the lethal genes discussion. Hope it helps.
What controls white factor?
White factor is a numeric representation of the the sum total of all the little things that influence the amount of white of a horse. Foals inherit some of their white factor level from their parents and some from the genes they have. Mutations can also push white factor up. The more mutations on a foal the higher it's white factor. Beware of breeding risky crosses when splash and frame are also in the mix. They increase the over all white factor and your risk of a lethal foal.

So if I cull for low to no WF I should eventually get horses with none.

So it seems like if one were to start with a WF of none, have no kit mutations, no splash and frame, it should stay around none, maybe drifting up to minimal sometimes?Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Staying away from any form of splash and frame helps too.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

Here are the two foundation stallions I'm using
WO1 My Own Personal Brand
WO1 Your Darkest Hour
The one has KitW20 which I'll be breeding out
And a few of my foundation girls
WO1 Twilight
WO1 New Moon
WO1 Breaking Dawn
I don't have any 2nd gen boys yet but I'm pulling a few girls from my Silver black herd to use in my 2nd gen
WO2 Eclipse
WO2 What A Stupid Lamb
WO2 You Are My Life Now -
But at the same time I have a few horses with white on them with a white factor of none and solid horses with no white markings at all with a WF of minimal with no kit genes or splash or frame. High white factor may not inherently mean you'll get foals with white markings, it may just mean their genes may not play nice with horses with WFs higher or with certain mutations.Be not afraid to ask questions.
