Who To Sell?
  • I'm basically just looking to see how everyone else chooses which horses to sell. Do you go by PT or points? Or something else? My main thing is going for crazy colors, but I don't want to sacrifice for color at the same time. I'm not sure exactly what makes a specific horse a good breeder so any help would be appreciated!

  • Using Breeding Advice and papering your horses is the place to start for deciding who to keep for breeding stock.

I also always use the comparison test to sort my stallions, except for foundations. However, I have a Premium Upgrade, so this isn't as expensive for me. I also have a pretty large stable with a great showing bonus, so I don't have many financial worries.

For non-premium, smaller stables, I suggest using the comparison occasionally, and mostly comparing foal PT scores when the horses have a sizeable number of offspring.

For myself, I try to follow this progression for my non-exceptional breeder stock.

Foundations - C papered stallions and Yellow mares.
2nd Generation - B papered stallions and Red papered mares. I definitely neuter any foals that paper the same as their sire or dam at this level.
3rd Generation - A papered stallions are best, but if a sire has only B papered sons I will keep the best B son that comparison tests superior to sire. I will keep Red papered daughters and compare their foal PTs with the dams, until I get a lot of Blue papered 3rd gen mares.
Fourth Generation - A papered sons that comparison test superior to their sire and Blue papered mares.

Other players have much stricter breeding programs than I do, so they might give you other advice.

Don't use the number of intact foals as your only criteria for judging breeding ability. For one thing, there is a wide variety of possible results for both showing and breeding no matter the paper level of the parents.

The odds of getting intact foals are set fairly low, anyway, and your stable needs as many neutered show horses as you have room for to help boost your showing bonus. It takes a while for them to level up enough to collect a lot of points, but eventually, unless a horse has a very low PT score, they will make themselves worth keeping. A stallion or mare that gives you a lot of neutered foals with higher PT scores than it has itself, can benefit your income, even if they don't help develop your line.

  • Thank you! I just went through and got papers on everyone in both stables and my pasture. Other than a few that I REALLY like the color on, I think I'm going to start selling my C and Yellow papered horses. Lots of crazy colors, someone out there might want them!
