Another way to achieve the same effect, depending on how simple your tattoo is, is to make it whatever color (dark or light) will show up on the horse colors you expect to be most common in your stable, and then outline it in the opposite color. This is something I do fairly frequently.

Here are a several examples..

Light colored horse with both brown carrier on the shoulder and DP carrier on the thigh.

Dark horse with brown carrier on the shoulder.

Medium colored horse (roan) with DP carrier on the shoulder.

Black Liver Chestnut horse with DP and Frame carrier tattoos on the shoulder.

Light colored horse with Frame carrier on the shoulder.

In case you're wondering, my DP tattoo are the Greek letters Delta Phi. :D
