Paper levels
  • I'd like to hear how everyone culls based on paper levels. Do you have a limit for each generation? Ex., do you cull all 3Gs that paper lower than red, all 4Gs that paper lower than blue, ect., or do you do it differently? Trying to set some guidelines for myself as I'm trying to get rid of my lower quality horses.

  • Because I have just started out (I say that yet have been here since feb...) This is my order:

    2G: Yellow/C are altered. Red/B expected
    3G: Red/B accepted, hopeful for a Blue/A
    4G: Red/B altered, must be Blue/A

Haven't gotten much past 4G, but I barely buy into others lines and, if I do, they usually are below 3Gen.

    Prices are almost always negotiable.
  • Personally I go:

    2g: B/red - sometimes A/Blue if boosted/ExP lines
    3g: A/Blue
4g: A/Blue - all colts must be superior to sire

I'm pretty strict as my foundation stock is mostly RS, PF, TNP or ExP. All inconsistent stock goes unless it's really really pretty. But everyone has different standards based on their own goals :) Hope this helped!
  • Thanks guys!

  • I just tweaked my program a little so these are my qualifications:

    Fillies:
    2G: Red (occasional blue)
    - If I have a filly that passes testing but papers yellow but also has desirable genes (like my Meteoric Milestone filly), then I will place her with my foundations versus my 2nd gens. I am not opposed to mixing generations by one.
    3G: Blue/Red - All yellows get snipped
    4G: Blue - All reds/yellows get snipped
5G+: *Gold - Anything less gets snipped

Colts are a little different. I'm a lot more strict on my colts. All get comp tested against sire and they must be superior. I'm a little more lenient the higher the generation but only if they test AGA and have desirable genes.

2G: If the colt is from a C papered foundation, the colt must paper B and superior. If the colt is from a B papered foundation, the colt must paper A and superior.
3G: Must paper A and superior
4G: Must paper A and superior (*stars are rare at this generation but i'll take 'em if I ever get one!)
    5G+: *Star papered and superior
  • I've just started breeding a few of my 2g horses but my plans have already changed base on the results.

    1g - must pass SBA
2g - must pass SBA, paper B/Red and colts must be superior to sire. I even have a benchmark who is really really superior, I cull colts who do not test AGA him.
3g - Just had my first real crop of 3g foals. 4 out of 29 not only came out intact but papered A/Blue so yeah, was planning on letting the papering slide for 3g but now that I see what is possible no sliding. They must be A/Blue. I may keep some Reds if they are particularly pretty. Also colts must test superior to sire.
4g - At this point no clue. Guess we will see how it goes.
  • Here are mine:

All must pass SBA except Advanced Breeding Lab babies, who must pass BA and still hit these Papering goals.

    Mares:
    Gen 2--Red and Blue.
Gen 3--Red currently accepted, but as soon as I have enough Blues to make the majority of a pasture, Reds will be culled.
Gen 4--Blue, will expect a few *Golds from Exceptional lines
Gen 5--the goal will be Golds, but will work like the gen 3 pasture--Blues accepted until I have enough Golds to tip the balance.

    Colts:
    Gen 2--B and A. B colts must compare AGA a gen 2 A colt.
Gen 3--A, must be superior to a Gen 2 A colt.
Gen 4--A and *Star, Goal is for As to be AGA a low *Star.
Gen 5 and up--*Star only, superior to the previous generation.
