I want to try breed a line like this, what genes are responsible for making her dark. She's different from my other buckskins

This girl, lighter, has no At

But this girl who is double At and double sooty is even lighter! I don't get it

What's the secret to breeding dark buckskins?

  • She may have dp, however remember what Cheers always says~!

Het brown is darker than hom brown!

  • This horse is het brown as well, but hom sty and het dp. The shoulders of your horse are darker. Not too sure how sty effects het brown buckskins...I'd say that maybe, MAYBE your mare has a copy of dp, but not too sure...

  • So looking at my buckskins, I'm coming across a few things.

First, buckskin duns tend to be rather light. If you want dark, avoid the dun gene.

Second, of course go for the darkening genes like sooty and dp.

Third, the browns are one of the darkest, usually either with dp or het brown,

Fourth, non dp wild bay (A+) also seems to make them darker.

    Food for thought:

  • Yeah, brown is weird! Basically, I think of it this way:

Black, or Extension, or E/e, is what is responsible for whether horses can have black hairs. If they're ee, they are all red. If they have E, the horse is technically black all over.

But, then you have Agouti, or bay, which "pushes" the black pigment away to reveal the red underneath.

Wild Bay, A+, is the strongest Agouti and it pushes the black all the way to the ankles/fetlocks. It's super strong.

Bay, A, isn't quite as strong but it's still a solidly dominant gene. It can only push the black down to the knees/hocks.

Brown, At, is incompletely dominant in the game. When brown is heterozygous, it's really really weak and really only pushes the black away from the belly. But when it's homozygous, it can gang up on the black pigment and push it away nearly as well as Regular Bay can.

Other genes in the game with "incomplete" dominance effects are things like Cream/pearl, PATN1 for appies, and Splash 1. All 3 of these genes are "stronger" when homozygous, but still have some effect when heterozygous.
  • Some great information to remember there, thanks Cheers

Looks like there are some cool combinations you can get playing with buckskins, the wild bay is pretty. Just to clarify, the best genes to go for to get the darker buckskins is het brown, sooty and dp?

@ObsidianKitsune Wow, she'll be very welcome in my barn. I love her dapples!
  • Sooty and dp are always best for getting darker colours. However in wild bay, dp tends to make them bright red, like tomato cause!

Het brown is always darker than hom brown but, as you see with my Rhythm of Four mare (a RS), three darkening genes are enough to make them darkish.

I'll send you a pm about that mare ^^
