Just a little genetics help..
  • Is there a link to a genetics guide in the announcements? *Scurries off to look*
    My question is pretty basic, but I really haven't delved too deeply into genetics yet.. if I breed a grey to a chestnut will the chestnut always override the grey coat in the foal? Or usually? Or it's complicated? Lol
    Sorry I haven't gone looking enough yet.. any and all genetic help sent my way is much appreciated. :)

  • While gray is commonly called a coat color by breed registries, genetically it may be more correct to call it a depigmentation pattern. It is a dominant allele, and thus a horse needs only one copy of the gray allele, that is, heterozygous, to be gray in color.

  • Gray is always dominant. But the foal must have the gene to be gray (passed down from gray parent). If the horse is homozygous, it will always pass down one copy of it's gene.

  • Found it. Does anyone have any other links available? Any good sites that explain? It doesn't quite answer my questions as far as what to expect from a pairing.. Homo and Het stuff and dominant and recessive is still pretty confusing to me..

    I sometimes play around with this. Not sure if it's 100% accurate and obvious it doesn't show some of the game genes. :)

  • Yeah, I know what they mean, but how do they really work, what am I going to get if I cross a horse with AA or Aa or FF or ff? That kinda stuff. Lol
    I just saw my first horse with a dD as opposed to a Dd, and didn't know if that made a difference, or where my horse got it.. why they show the way they do? I also got a lethal white last month and now know why, but it always seems to surprise me and I don't want it to happen again. It's all so confusing to me for some reason. I yi yi X_X

  • Sounds like you are missing the fundamentals when it comes to genetics. I'd learn how to do punnett squares.

  • Left Allele is from the sire Right is from the dam I think. Seen it somewhere lmao!
    Ages ago I used to sit down with pen an paper and write down all possible gene combos for Bays, blacks,etc. Then would select 2 random as a "pair" and try to work out the outcomes of the "foal".
    Definitely takes some time to learn :P

  • Here is a sample Punnet Square for White 1 that shows how a horse with two parents that carry that gene can end up dying before it can be born.

    Across the top, you see the two copies that the stallion carries. He got White 1 from his sire and unmutated Kit from his dam.

    Down the left side, you see the two copies that the mare carries. She got unmutated Kit from her sire and White 1 from her dam.

    In the second row/second column we see one possible result for the pair of Kit genes the potential foal could inherit--KitWKit (sire's share followed by the dam's). The foal will have White 1.

    In the second row/third column we see another possible result--KitKit. This time the foal did not inherit White 1 from either parent and will not show the pattern in question.

    In the third row, second column we see a third possibility for the foal--KitWKitW. The foal has inherited two copies of the mutation and since the Kit gene is seriously broken in both copies, vitally important things controlled by the Kit gene cannot be developed, and the foal will die before birth.

    In the third row/third column we see the fourth and final potential result--KitKitw. The foal inherits a single copy of the mutation and so remains alive and shows the pattern.

    You can do this with every gene, no matter what it is. Just draw the 3x3 diagram, put each copy of the gene that the sire carries at the top of the second or third columns, in the same order that they show up in the gene test results.

    Next, in the first column, put each copy of the gene that the dam carries, with the first appearing letter(s) in the 2nd row and the second letter in the bottom row.

    Then bring down the gene at the top of the second column into the two rows below it and the gene at the top of the third column into the two rows below.

    Next, bring the copy of the gene in the second row/first column over into the second and third columns following the sire's copies that you have already recorded.

    Finally bring the copy of the gene in the third row/first column over into the other two columns following the copies that have already been recorded there.

    Then you will see the four possible results that the foal might inherit.
