Welcome to Hunt and Jump. It's a complex game, I admit, but don't worry if it takes you a while to master it. We're a friendly group and like giving new players a helping hand.

The FAQ linked near the bottom of the left menu gives a good basic overview, but it doesn't cover all the fine points. No question about the game is "dumb" or "silly." Most of us have asked them, an no one gets tired of answering.

Breeding is fun, but the money making part of the game is showing. In every show, all horses but the one that comes in last adds "show points" to its record. These points are the basis for the showing bonus that is paid out nightly. Intact horses can be shown as well, of course, and also acquire points, but breeding can get expensive, so having a good string of show horses is very helpful.
