Real life horse genetics question
-
I have a chestnut mare and she’s got a lighter (blonde/silver/cream/pearl?) section in her tail. It’s in the middle but the whole outside of her tail is dark chestnut like the rest of her. Is that Normal for a chestnut?EasternShowBarn

I have seen a lot of chestnuts that have either a flaxen or sooty hunk in the tail, to the point of being common. If it was white, then you might suspect a white pattern or scar in addition to chestnut. But I would say normal. Anyone else?
-
I would also say it’s normal unless she’s got anything else funky going on with her color. My guess is maybe the flaxen gene. My sister used to have a haflinger-QH cross who was light chestnut (pangere?) and had a yellow blonde mane (flaxen?) but his tail was dark brown almost black. I’ve never seen it before or since. Would have been fun to test him.ID# 43830

@RipshinCreekFarm @HTRanch she doesnt really have anything to funky other than a few white hairs on her mid belly, a star and a funky left sock she’s normal. Her main and tail are the same color but her tail is darker by a little other than that chunk.EasternShowBarn

A scar? Interesting, I never thought about a scar leaving white in the tail, though it makes sense now that you've mentioned it. I used to have a "dream horse" of bay, no white, but with a white streak down the middle of the tail. I changed it later as I couldn't figure a way for it to happen, but if a scar would do that I think you just solved my writing problem. Anyone have any pictures/experience of how such a marking in the tail would look?ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
I don't have any pictures that show it very well, but I had a mustang gelding named Bobby that was missing the end of his tail bone. He was attacked by a cougar as a yearling, it tore part of the tail off, including the end of the tail bone. At least that's the story we heard about his tail. We rescued him, so we don't really know what happened to him. Anyway, the hairs growing from the tip of the tail came in white.#28036Thanked by 1Lallyhop

I have an AQHA reg sorrel gelding that has... Birdcatcher spots, I'm guessing... Anyhow, one spot is right on the hairline so he has a white streak in his mane.Thanked by 1Lallyhop
