Here is a post that explains it a bit. Basically, sooty, sooty+, and DP (Dense Pheomelanin) are the three basic darkening genes in the game. While sooty and sooty+ show up on genetic testing, DP is a hidden gene. If a horse has three or more darkening genes, they end up that chocolate or black liver color. Based on the chart, this mare is het DP because she tested homozygous recessive for sooty, but is too dark to be a plain jane basic chestnut.ID# 43830

Correct. I'm not sure she's actually het DP. I think it might actually be the wild bay that is making her a little darker. I'm sorry I didn't reaspond last night, I fell asleep. I'll try and find some others with similar genes and compare today and see if she is her or not. :)

Interesting, Cheval, I had never heard of that. If she’s not what you want, let me know and I will buy her back!ID# 43830

I adore her. We found out she's definitely het DP. :) Lol. It was a good experience, and I wanted her for my KP liver stud. So works perfectly for me.
I'm going to look to see if it was the brown gene that I was thinking of. :)
