Breeding Help!
  • Okay some questions I have for breeding, I just upgraded my account 100% for the Adv. Breeding Lab... Now I need to know exactly how to use it, lol.

First: What's fair pricing on tested lined/foundation stallion's straws?
Second: Whats the difference between Guarrenteed and Not when purchasing/selling straws
Third: How many on average should you keep frozen per horse?
Fourth: Any other good info I should know?
  • Guaranteed straws mean the foals will pass at least regular BA when bred to a similar papered horse. Ie yellow to C, red to B and blue to A and gold to Star.

For quality line bred even horses breed generation to generation. If you just want pretty show ponies you can bootstrap (ie uneven) breeding.

As for prices on foundation straws... Honestly depends on the genes

I personally only use the breeding lab for studs an mares that have awesome genes and are worth the investment as its more money than hand breeding or pasture breeding.

I only pull eggs and create embryos for super special genes like snowflake, kp, nexus etc. As it is expensive!

  • 1) it really depends on the horse. What special genes does he have? How highly does he Paper compared to other horses of his generation? How desirable are his genetics? How rare are his genetics? There is no hard and fast rule here. Spending some time in the Horse Search or browsing other stallion ads can help you.

    2) a guaranteed straw means you will keep on sending “free” (1hb each since you can’t sell a straw for less) straws until the purchaser gets a foal that passes testing. If they get a foal that fails, they Private Message you with a link to the foal and you send them another straw. Eggs are never guaranteed. Usually people don’t guarantee for color, just passing the tests. Some people will request that any foals that paper below a certain level be snipped even if they do pass (for instance, you might require that any gen 2 foals Paper at least B/Red to stay intact). You keep sending straws (at a 500hb cost to yourself) until they get an intact one. Some people will sell a foal from their own stock if a person is really struggling to get an intact foal. Also some people will only honor the guarantee if you are breeding to a mare with an equivalent paper level. It gets complicated and I don’t think I’ve done a good job answering...

3). I personally only pull straws from my boys in 3 situations. A—I want to use some of their straws myself, for instance, in the embryo lab with eggs I have. B—I’ve sold straws to someone and need to send them out. C—a favorite stallion of mine is getting old enough that he might pass out of the game, so I might stockpile some straws so I can keep on using them. I don’t usually keep straws on hand from my boys as I greatly prefer pasture breeding.

4). Remember the lab is super super super expensive to use. Breeding foals in the lab is much more expensive than pasture breeding or even hand breeding your mares in house or to outside stallions. It is a wonderful option to have, but it’s very easy to spend hundreds of thousands of hbs producing lab foals. As a newer player without a huge cash flow, I’d recommend that you use it sparingly.
  • Here are my answers, by no means the only answers for your questions.

What's fair pricing on tested lined/foundation straws?
I usually sell straws for pulling price--500hbs--if I'm not guaranteeing the straws. This is because I have so many horses I don't need to make a profit on the deal. *G* If the stallion has a special color--DP, for instance, or I'm selling straws from a stallion with a closed gene, I would probably raise that to 1k per straw, at least.

What's the difference between Guaranteed Straws and Not when purchasing/selling straws?
If a straw is guaranteed, that means that the seller will provide additional straws for a minimal price (usually 1hb) for every non-intact or non-desired gene carrier until the buyer gets an intact foal with the desired special gene (if any special gene is involved. You can expect to pay more for guaranteed straws when buying them. For selling, I would probably go up to 5k per guaranteed straw, depending on the gene.

How many on average should you keep frozen per horse?
My practice is to pull straws as needed. If I were to auction or straight sell guaranteed straws, I might pull more than the first order, but not a whole lot. It's always possible to pull extra straws when needed, up to the limit allowed with your Upgrade.

    Any other good info?
When selling straws, make sure there is no space in front of the ID number of the player you are selling them to. This can happen when you copy and paste the ID. The space prevents the sale from going through.
