Paper/SBA/Breeding quality question
-
So I did some of my pasture breeding yesterday of a new foundation line that I'm starting. The stud is C papered and the mares are yellow papered, all passed SBA and most mares had a 21 day pasture bonus (exception being 2 mares that only had 5 day bonus). I had a few fillies that passed SBA but papered the same as their dams (yellow). Not ideal. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking that their dams are likely low yellows and so these fillies are (probably) mid/high yellows which allowed them to pass the SBA. There are a couple of these fillies that I would consider keeping around for breeding due to having the genetics I'm looking for but don't want my lines going backward either.
So what do you do in this case? Are you of the mind that, if they paper yellow they get snipped, end of story? Or do you let them grow and try a couple breedings to see how they do and then judge from there? If you do end up breeding them (and you want to keep lines even) do you put them with a second gen C or B papered stud?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

For the most part, if my 2g fillies paper yellow, they get the immediate snip, no question. However I have made one exception with my Meteoric Milestone filly (she papered yellow but passed regular BA) so I threw her back in with my foundations :) That way she has a better chance of throwing intact babies, being bred to a C papered boy.

So far that's what I've been doing as well but this time around they are just so pretty that I had to pause and think about it. I just think it's a little funny how people will let things slide if it's a special horse, only do BA for example or keep them even if they paper a little low...
So does your yellow filly throw decent foals or have you not yet had the chance to breed her?ID: 40723 -
I snip all 2G yellows (except for one line I have for my Meteoric Milestone stud who papered C so I put him to 2G yellows). No questions asked - it's so easy to get 2G reds that I see no need to keep any yellows for 2G.

Only very special lines (one offs) get let off as yellow/C at 2nd gen :)

I snip yellow lined horses but my line is well established and I have a few hundred foundations to breed a month lol
But if I was starting a new line and didn’t have the same build up of mares I would consider keeping SBA passed yellow mares in the 2nd generation only. But as soon as I felt that I had enough red mares in the second generation they would be the first to get the snip. -
If she passed SBA and had the genes I wanted, I'd keep a yellow filly until something better popped up. If I could recreate the breeding, i would try for something better from her parents, but hang on to her just in case. I've done this a few time, and have rarely kept the filly to breeding age. A better replacement usually pops up in the next couple seasons.#28036

I have a small “throwback” barn where my pretty g2 yellows are.
My 2mil baby came out a C so I’ll probably just use them as his line/harem.
Usually though, g2 c/yellow get the boot.
