The stand off at Whiskey Oaks farm

I thought I would share a story that is playing out at our house. I raise Heritage Poultry and water fowl in RL. Most of my breeds are considered endangered livestock by The Livestock Conservancy so every bird is important. We have an Akbash who Guards are birds. His name is Tal. Three nights ago a coon managed to kill and or eat two young pullets through the 1/4 inch wire mesh pen before Tal found him and chased him up a tree that literally is feet away from the night pens everyone sleeps in. Tal has not left the bottom of this tree and the coon obviously hasn't left the tree either. It's like the shoot out at the OK corral. Who's going to make the first move.

Go Tal!

All right Tal! Be careful of Tal though.
A family that lived next door to us raised domestic fowl years ago. A raccoon pair came one night and killed several of their chickens. The raccoons kept coming back almost every night. They tried everything, smaller fencing, boards, even dogs. The dogs got hurt from the raccoons. They didn't want to hurt them because the female was a very rare albino raccoon, and protected by laws. So they tried trapping them to relocate. The raccoons were too smart for that. They finally had to have a professional come out and tranquilize them to relocate. They didn't take the raccoons far enough away the first time, they came back after a week or so. The next time they relocated them to another part of the state on a reserve, and they didn't come back after that. -
Yeah, we prefer to keep our predators alive around here. A live predator who decides on their own that a chicken, duck or goose dinner isn't worth it is better then a new predator moving in to takes its place. Tal has taken on quit a few predators that have decided his bark, size, and presence are not enough to deter them, including a fox and a coyote or two. This isn't his first coon but they can be very mean and can inflict some pretty nasty wounds for sure.
