Another liver foundy stallion- what to do?
-
So far I’ve created a homozygous roan liver foundation stud, and an Exceptional Producing liver roan Rabicano stud. Today I got an Exceptionally Perfect liver boy
SL Tribal Council XP
Would it be worth spending the money to GMT cream or dun on him so I have something different to my other liver foundation boys? Or would I be better off turning my FF liver filly into a colt that I can GMT things on to? I wish I had the funds to do it all!Thanked by 1supersarah -
Depends on if you're happy breeding for Livers? I mean, if you love the look of liver why change it. If you love choco palomino's too, go for it.#4519

I’m absolutely a sucker for chocolates lol. But would love a hom DP foundation... I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to buy so many GMT tokens! I could maybe save up this month to make him a chocolate palomino roan dun eventually. Surely 3 GMTs is achievable, it’s just a shame I won’t be able to breed him until I’m happy with him. Patience isn’t my strong suit :))

I'd definitely GMT this guy over your FF filly. If it were me, I'd want to GMT off at least one of the frames off the FF. You'd also have to spend a GMT changing her sex, and she's only C papered whereas your boy above is B papered. Just my opinion. :)

Pros and cons of each, from what I can see:
Colt
Pros:
Experf
No frame
Cons:
Experf
Het dp
Filly
Pros:
PF
Hom dp
Cons:
PF
Frame
Filly
I put the papering as both pro and con for each because each one has it’s own cost/benefit. A C papered foundie is easier to pair with other foundation mares. A B papered is better matched with only experf/expros. On the other hand, you get higher quality foals out of the experf/expro matches, and you have a chance at a A/blue 2G. It’s up to you which you prefer.
As for the other things, well, you’ve got het dp otherwise fine on one side, and you’ve got a hom dp filly with frame on the other side.
Costs:
Colt
Gmt on dp: 10
Total: 10
Filly
Gmt off frame: 1 or 2 (I’d do both but you don’t have to do any if you’re matching with plain mares, though you’d need to make sure you had a different colt for 2G if all the foals have het frame)
Gmt gender: 2
Total: 4
That would make them both equal horses, aside from papering.
Now, the question is whether you want C or B papering. If you really want experf quality, you’d need a 5% boost on the filly, which would make GMTing the filly more expensive. If you’re fine with C papering, then GMTing the filly is cheaper.
Of course, if you’re fine with het DP instead of hom, the colt is cheaper to go with - just know that only half of the foals will be getting DP instead of all of them. It all depends on how much culling you want to do in the end, really, and whether the foals that don’t fit your plans have another place to go or if they’ll become show ponies, etc.
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
Thanks for the breakdown, that’s really helpful. I don’t want to keep any frame in my herds if possible so if I were to GMT my FF filly then I’d have to get rid of both of those.
As for this guy being an ExPerf, to me it’s a good thing as I mostly create ExPro and ExPerf foundation mares. Not that I’d use him for every day pasture breeding, just with the hom sooty mares in colours I want my second gens in.
It looks like my best option might be to sell my FF filly and put that money towards tokens for this guy. I’m not sure I could make him hom DP but a few minor adjustments might be fun. Cream, roan, dun... maybe even pearl if I can afford it! You could get a lot from 10 tokens rather than just putting them all towards another copy of DP, as much as I would love that. -
Now that pasture breeding has opened I should be able to start making money again for a few weeks. Then it’s a matter of whether to spend the $$ on extra barns (desperately needed) or splash out on GMTs for this boy.
