Missed snowflake?
-
Am I correct in thinking that this girl missed snowflake all together because she has no Lp?

This is where snowflake confuses me, can she still be a het carrier because her sire was homo SNF? I thought they had to have an Lp to show it though..Breeder of Quality Warmbloods and Show Horses

If I'm correct in my thinking that dad is hom snowflake, this lady is het for it, Lp or no.
She would only show for snowflake if she has two copies (it's a recessive gene).
Even if she had an Lp, she would not show snowflake, because she only has one copy of the gene.ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

They need to be homozygous for snowflake and be appaloosa to show snowflake spots. So yes, she is a carrier, at least het, but can't show it because she has no Llp to 'switch on' the snowflake.

I know they can't show it without Lp, but I didn't know whether or not they could still pass it on without it. Kind of like a horse can miss out on frame, but then they won't have the ability to pass it on at all.Breeder of Quality Warmbloods and Show Horses

Gotcha. Yes, if they have snowflake, even if they don't express it, whether because they're only het or because they don't have Llp, (or both!) they can still pass it along to their offspring and it can hide unseen for multiple generations.

Shes definitely snowflake. It just doesnt show because she doesnt have lp. You could always GMT it onto her for one GMT.

KAM, think of it like chestnut horses passing on their Agouti alleles. They don’t express bay or brown or whatever, but they pass it on to their offspring. Similarly, this girl can’t show her het snowflake pattern without another copy and appy, but she can pass it to her babies, so if you breed her back to a brother with appy, (or another snowflake/snowflake carrier stallion with appy) then statistically some of her babies will be snowflake appies!
