Is it worth keeping higher papered stallions who only rate AGA their sire?
-
I have a B-papered foal this season out of his C-papered sire, but comparison testing said he's only as good as (not superior to) his sire. I'm pretty new, and I have a couple questions!
1) Why is the foal AGA his sire even though he papered better?
2) Is it worth keeping the foal for breeding my second generation, or should I hold out for a foal who is better than his sire?
My foal, SEB Pierre:
His sire, SEB Jean: -
You could keep him untill you get one that tests superior, and snip him then? I myself only keep 2Gs that are at least superior to an expro, but I breed around 1000 foals every season...
You have to remember that AGA is ABOUT as good as their sire. Meaning, they an be a little better, just the same, or a alittle worse. That is the reason that most people only keep superior sons. It's a bit of a gamble with AGA colts, as they might make your breeding program go backwards. With your colt though, you do know that he is, at least, a bit better than his sire. -
I’m recent memory I’ve only kept 2 AGA studs studs intact.
1 AGA on hj1 from an A papered foundation that will age out next month that I’ve yet to get any replacement colts from and another higher Gen A papered stud gave me an AGA *Star stud on this server.
I just did a massive cull and reorganize on both servers and pretty sure both were snipped although I did leave the 2nd Gens Superior son intact since he did fall within my requirements of staying intact
The paper levels are fluid and overlapping so by papering higher he is better but by comparison testing AGA that means his quality isn’t quite better enough to be superior.
If you like him keep him until you have a Superior but at second Gen level it’s usually not difficult to start drowning in Superior colts so I’d personally geld.
Once you get into the higher generations it’s harder to get foals to remain intact through basic testing that it’s even harder to get superior.
Like maribo I do breed 450-750 foals on each server per season and have been playing for years so am fairly strict sticking to my personal cull requirements as I do get a lot of studs and don’t need more than 1/4. (I need to refill my foundation stock but breed 240-260 foundations each season) -
Thanks for the advice, both of you! This helps a lot. My program is still very small - I just bred 18 foals in my first breeding season - so I'll probably keep him for now and see if I have better luck next month!
