For SS, is it better to get 1-2 super awesome horses, or several horses that suit your giftee?
  • Basically the title heh. It's my first year of SS and I'm trying to strategize. Would you rather get 1-2 horses that tick every box and then some, or a small herd of horses that each capture 1-3 of your preferences? I'm sure to some extent it's down to preference, so just your opinion is fine! I'm in the 250k-2 million category if that changes your answer - thanks in advance :)
  • That's a hard choice. One big present is nice, but several smaller presents are nice too.

I'm going for several, that way I hope to at least get some of what my SS is wanting.
  • You could always get 1-2 big presents, and then just fill out the smaller ones for horses that you got for 2500, like flashy show ponies that are still foals.

  • What I'm doing is I'm trying to get as many small presents as I can with then having a few of the best as a grand finale. I'm 250k group.

  • I think your honestly 50/50 either way. Well fewer horses total can be nice in that they take up less room than several it can sometimes be easier/more cost effective to obtain several horses with the various genes your SS likes then 1-2 absolutely perfect horses.

I'm with Obsidian on if you go the 1-2 route you can also pick up a bunch of low cost show ponies to use as fill gifts.
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

  • I agree, have some variance. All variety. At least one medium one, if not large and quite a few not quite as nice ones as well
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • I'm getting my giftee one MAJOR gift that ticks most of their boxes, and then im gathering a bunch of showponies and other horses for my person that will also be delivered whenever. (Most likely on Christmas)

  • My SS won't know what hit them - I have one biggish pressie and lots and lots of little ones - everyone has been so generous :)
    Love everyone here :X
  • I definitely agree on the bit of both front - one (maybe two) "wow" presents, accompanied by several smaller "stocking stuffers". I've found that tactic works well to please people with irl gifting too!

  • Maybe like a 12 days of Christmas would be cool? Ya know, gradually giving them better presents every day so you wont be so cluttered on your end? :)
  • Also; when are we supposed to reveal ourselves? Is it after Christmas?
  • I usually send a PM to reveal myself Christmas Eve (traditionally I take the laptop to bed and sort through everything and send them right before I go to sleep) or Christmas morning / early afternoon.

Although I’ve had them sent to me Boxing Day or later.

The 12 days of Christmas sounds cool but can also get cluttered on the receivers end too lol I’ve had gifts sent at the same time people responding to my ad sent random things they think my Ss would like and at the end I was sitting there with a list of leftover straws that I wasn’t sure if I was getting or giving (one year I had bought a bunch of straws for my SS to the same stud my Ss had sent me straws from).

Now I make sure to send a detailed list to each of my SS’s and send them all together so that if they have mystery straws left over they can check to see if it was from me or for their SS.
  • My SS isn't picky. Actually this year hopefully will go pretty smoothly as we breed for the most part the same thing. I'm sending numerous mid-high range over and gifting 2 to 4 BIG ones. And probably filling the blank space with semen, eggs, and show ponies.

  • I have three large gifts for mine that together eat up over half my budget, and then a bunch of smaller stocking stuffers that are 1-2 of the genes or straws. I started buying stuff on spec early (about when I first heard about SS, because I don't have a large show bonus yet and figured that coming up with that much hbs all at once would be hard.), so I have a bunch of RSes, good show ponies, fancy straws, etc. but off course, I didn't know what to buy for, so they obviously don't tick off all the "wants". People have been so super helpful in helping me get those large gifts - even with my saving and pre-buying, I wouldn't have been have to get one of the "perfect" mares without the generosity of other players.

As a side note, I have several brindle straws and several DP straws that I received through giveaways. If anyone wants some for their SS, I am more than happy to pass them on. Otherwise, I'll just save them for next year, or for when I'm able to do a giveaway of my own someday.
  • I wondering now whether my SS has room for all the horses I have collected. I think I might have got carried away :D
  • Thanks to everyone! This has been a super illuminating thread :) In the end though, I shouldn't have been worried - I'm definitely at the point of digging into show ponies and straws to fill up the ranks! It seems so easy to blow money any other time, but everyone's so giving during Secret Santa my budget is stretching way father than expected haha. This is such an incredible community :x
