Performance Testing
-
Hey everyone, just upgraded to basic, and I am trying to understand performance testing.
1. What are the ranges of scores?
2. How can this affect later generations of foals?
Thanks! -
I know Foundations rang anywhere from .02 to 9.9 which is the highest they can be. Also want to note PT scores has nothing to do with breeding ability it is strictly showing ability so don't under estimate a low PT score mare. You can breed her to a PF stallion and get foals who PT test 10 or better.Thanked by 1tenor67

I actually have a Top Notch mare with an 0.2 score. :)
For 2nd generation foals, I usually don't keep anything below 9.5, just for quality's sake. If you get a foal with a score lower than 9, I recommend keeping a record of that in the dam's notes. :) This is all just my opinion. Other people have very different standards. :) -
Gen 2 PT seems to top out at 10.5 in my experience. The PT of the dam does not impact the PT of the foals she produces--I have 0.whatever dams throwing foals with 10.something PTs and 9.9 mares throwing foals with 9.sometning PTs. However, the theory is that you want your PTs to go up every generation as an indication that the quality of your herd is increasing. I also cull gen 2 foals that PT below 9.5 and I now have a big enough gen 2 herd that I am thinking about increasing that a bit. Certainly if you are seeing upper gen horses with very low PTs, you should be questioning the value of their parents as breeders. There have been some good threads about culling foals in the past that outline some players PT and papering cut offs for their foals that may be helpful to you. If you search for "culling" on the forum you should run across them.Thanked by 1RoseFlute
