Hi, I'm still new with this and trying to figure all this stuff out. I understand that everything here is genetic based, but is dapple the same? I can't find ant pages about it. I didn't have any expressing it, but then I had this foal appearing dappled.

I'm wondering if it is recessive, since looking I found this foal is from some accidental line breeding, so more likely for recessive traits to show. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something that can breed for, or is it random like chimeraism.

It's random (though thankfully much more common than chimerism!). It SEEMS more common to me in darker (horses carrying Ssty) or silver horses, but that may be more because the dapples are more noticeable on those colors to me! Horses carrying Sooty+ have a special kind of dappling that I'm pretty sure all of those horses currently display, but that gene recently got reworked and I can't say I've looked at all my kids to see if they still have their slightly mottled appearance!

Actually that is incorrect. It is genetic based and some genetic combinations produce far more dapples then others. Just like real life though some horses have more potential to dapple then others and it does not always show.

Thanks Cheers! Hope your kids still have their spots. :) I have a silver and one that looks like a sooty buckskin, but it's the chestnut with the spots. lol. I was wondering if I needed to keep him simply for the dapple. Still don't feel a need to sell him yet, but it's nice to know I wouldn't be losing rare genes.

Hey Wildland Acres, if you really like the colt's coloring and dapples then I think it would be beneficial for you to keep him. You could also search for sooty or sooty+ stallions for stud because, from my experience, they tend to produce pretty dappled foals.

For instance, my stallion with Ssooty Ssooty doesn't have dapples but he produces lots of dappled foals with mares that also have sooty.

So, Ammit, which genetic combinations seem to do that? ;) I /love/ the dapples, so I can't help asking. :D
