When I first moved to the country, I wasn't exactly happy to be there. My parents insisted that I would love it, but I missed my friends. Even being told that I would help raise the horses on the new ranch, and maybe have my own someday, didn't lift my spirits. Especially when we arrived and I saw how rundown the place was. It looked more like the set of a country horror movie than a place I wanted to actually live. The previous owner was there to greet us, and he warned us of a wild horse that lived in his fields. He said she was mean and he couldn't catch her, but when winter came, she would likely be driven away. All we had to do was wait.

I didn't see the horse for several weeks, but one early morning as I walked outside to think, there she was. Her mane was a disaster and she was favoring her back leg, but her beauty still took my breath away. She watched me closely, but didn't seem to mind when I approached. And when I offered an apple, she took it daintily. Using bribes of apples and sugar, I got her into a stall in the barn before calling for my parents to come. When they saw her, they thought it would be better to put her down, thinking her leg was beyond saving, but I begged them to give me a chance. This horse was unlike any I had met, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing her.

Now, three years later, she still follows me like a large, happy puppy. No one can believe how this once wild spirit became so tame, but the truth is, she isn't tame at all. She is wild at spirit, and teaches me everyday how to be free in my heart, no matter how I am physically. Even as we stand on the ranch, we fly free. I have found shelter in her shadows.
