My mother always told me that I was never alone. That the spirits living throughout the world were always nearby, and that they would watch over me so long as I did them no harm. As I grew up, I started to believe her words to be folly. No one believed in the spirits anymore. They were nothing more than savage beliefs. But when my mother suddenly passed, I found myself lost in more ways than one. The heaviness in my heart made my chest hurt, and I had no idea what I was supposed to do next. Shortly after her funeral, I was sitting on the porch before dawn, staring at nothing, when I heard a sound. Standing before me, looking at me like I was crazy, was a gorgeous horse. Once she had my attention, she turned and began to walk away, and I could see the shape of an owl in flight on her flank. My mother had always loved owls, nearly as much as she loved horses, so I found myself following the strange mare. She led me through the town and into the cemetary, finally stopping at my mother's grave. It was the first time I'd been there since the funeral, and for a moment I could only stand silently, trying not to cry. Then, quite suddenly, the dawn broke, and the entire area was flooded with golden light. Startled, I looked up in time to see the sunrise, painting the land with such amazing colors, I could barely take it all in. All at once, mother's stories about the spirits came flooding back, and when I turned to find the mare, she was no where to be seen. There was, however, an owl sitting in the tree that shades my mother's grave. It hooted at me before flying away silently. And for the first time since her death, I felt peace.
