Help identifying DP carriers?
  • I have three horses that carry silver, brown, and dun. They also have at least one copy of DP, but I'm not sure if they're homozygous or not. I don't have many silver brown horses to draw experience from - hopefully someone here will have an eye for it!

This mare's dam is a confirmed carrier, and her sire probably is as well.

These two look to be the same color (whatever that is!)

The first one is by a black chestnut dun out of the same dam as the mare above, and the second one is also by a black chestnut dun out of the mare listed above.

They definitely carry one copy of DP from their sires, but are they dark enough to be homozygous?
  • Man you really like asking the hard ones, don't you??? My educated guess after perusing pedigrees of all three and comparing them to some silver brown duns that I KNOW are heterozygous for DP is that the bottom two may be homozygous for DP and that the top girl may not have DP at all.

Anarachnid's body is much paler in color than the other heterozygous DP silver brown dun kids I could find, even those with only one Ssty. While her legs are quite dark, I feel it's more likely that she missed out than that she's carrying. Obviously future breedings may show me to be wrong!

Your bottom two are quite similar in shade, though I would want to look at the filly next season with her adult coat to be sure. She may be a touch lighter than the stallion. I am inclined based on the really rich, deep dappling, the dark golden brown of their bodies and the rich dark chocolate brown of their points to call these guys homozygous for DP. They are much much much darker than the testers I know are heterozygous for DP. But again I may be wrong and you will have a better idea after breeding them a few times.

  • Haha thanks! I had to outsource before I pulled my hair out trying to figure this one out! Initially I was with you the mare - didn't think she was a carrier at all. But the foal I posted it out of her, so if he's homozygous then she'd have to carry DP even though she's a touch lighter.

The two silver dapple browns are darker than any I've found, and I got suspicious and a bit excited.

Thank you for doing all the extra research!
  • I definitely think the two on the bottom are homozygous. I dont know for sure but theyre pretty dark.

Anarachnid's sire is(was) a carrier. Its hard to know because the liver foals by him you can't tell who passed on the gene because was bred to another DP carrier. However he did give me one homozygous mare actually my first homozygous DP mare I ever bred! Shes a silver brown dun I think. So its very possible shes a carrier especially if that foal IS homozygous!
  • Anyway, theyre all very pretty regardless lol

  • Gorgeous, I agree with the other two, the bottom two may be Homozygous.

  • I was going to answer this when I first saw it up but wasn't confident enough especially since I have 2 or 3 new kids that I'm about to ask for DR help on XD
