Bad breeding season?
-
Have you all ever had a complete bad breeding season? I think the nice breeding fairy decided I didnt need her this season. I feel like I dont have any foals worth mentioning or keeping. I did better breeding out of pasture than I did in pasture. Is it just a bad season for me.
-
Sometime I have "down" seasons where everything feels wrong, I can't get a superior colt or I am disappointed by pt scores. I use those seasons to cull/alter and reevaluate my boys. I've never had much luck with embryo transfer, so that has been my downfall so far this season!Specializing in W8, W3 & Kit M Cream & Pearl draft horses.

It is frustrating. But I am taking the time to look at my boys. I have about 15 more mares to breed this season and am really comtemplating if I will.
-
I intentionally alternate seasons. One month I focus on the barn horses, and the next on the pasture horses. It doesn't make anything better or worse, but it does keep me sane, and keeps me from buying stuff on the game instead of paying the car insurance!
-
I think I may have to do that. My pasture horses didnt do it this month. Hopefully I might find a gem.
-
People still barn breed? I mean, I am hand breeding my restarted Era 0 Foundation line because I only have straws for them but other than that I haven't manually bred a horse since pastures came out. I have had bad years, the good years make up for it. It all balances out in the end.
-
Heavens yes I still barn breed. I keep all my perfect foundation mares in the barn...they have TONS of show points. They might as well earn me show bonus points while they wait to make babies. All my TNP mares are in the pasture...that is their only job.
-
Would someone be willing to look at my pastures to see where I can improve? I have 2 pastures. One i was using for my 2g mares and my primary for foundation. I am needing some advice if someone could help. I need critiquing if someone is willing. My id is 14374.

I hand breed frequently. I don't have enough pastures to give all my mares a pasture bonus.

About bad years--yes, sometimes the luck swings up--like the year I had a C papered regular create stallion in a pasture full of regular create mares (I think they probably had a full breeding bonus, but I can't swear to it.) give me three A papered sons. The next year I got at least 1 more from him. Talk about jaws dropping. On the other hand, sometimes it swings down. I have 2 exceptional producer Nexus stallions in HaJ1 of which only 1 has produced a superior to sire colt. They were bred to Exceptional Producer mares, too.
I will have days when I'm barn breeding, and it seems like almost everything is neutered or most of the foals turn out inconsistant. If this pattern continues for some time, I will give up breeding for a while and come back another day to try again. Usually that helps.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
