Grullo vs Smokey Black
-
Hello friends! I thought I was getting the hang of all the weird genetic twists, but the one that keeps getting me is differentiating grullo and smokey black! Can someone please explain to me what the difference is?
They both seem to be black with cream, and I can't figure out the differentiating factor. -
Grullo has dun, smokey black has cream. Smokey grullo has both dun and cream. :)

I am still learning so I am sure if I am wrong someone will correct me but that is my understanding. It takes a while to sort it all out. xx

Are you trying to tell the difference in the way they LOOK? or in their genetics?
-
Dinascar is right about the genetics.
A smokey black will look black. No obvious visual difference between a black and a smokey black.
A Grullo is a horse with a dark grayish body, black mane and tail and black dun barring on the legs.
So this guy is regular Black

This guy is smokey black--almost visually indistinguishable.

Obviously there are variations from here, especially when you start adding silver. But these are the 3 base colors you're wondering about,Thanked by 1Dinascar -
Okay thank you! I must have never noticed the dun gene when looking at the genetic layout! Appreciate the help guys <3<br />
edit: I'm on the wrong profile, whoops.
