You probably want to join a buddy chat dedicated to breeding a certain color or pattern or size. To find the list of chats that are accepting members, click the bell icon at the top right of the screen. This will take you to the Buddy Chat Lobby where you will see the list of available chat rooms. Some you can join freely, others you will need to request to join. If a chat you are a member of has had activity, the bell icon will turn yellow.

Only upgraded members (Premium accounts only, I believe) can create Buddy Chats (or groups), but all members can join them. Like Bourbon mentioned, the Beginners chat is a great one to be a part of. I also second Cheers' recommendations to join chats devoted to any specialties such as colors or types of horses you plan on breeding.
In this game, the fantasy genes are ones you have to buy (either with real money or GMTs) and many are private so you can't buy stock with the gene unless you already have purchased it for a foundation horse. -
