Haflinger Project?
  • So I want to start a line that will look like my haflinger but I'm having a hard time determining what color to use. This is the closest I've found. They aren't really palominos so that's out. These are both a little dark; I'm wondering satin version of these would be it? thoughts?

  • I'll look through my horses, but I think heavy pangere is an important part of the coloring. I'd definitely look for horses with PP in their genotype.

I'll look in my horses for some examples!

Something like this might work better. Flaxen Chestnut with no sooty :)

  • Yes I think any of the flaxen chestnuts with pangare would work
  • This is chocolate palomino (Het DP) With S+. I think Belgian Draft/Haflinger when I see this color.

  • You definitally need to get the pangere in there. I love this idea. I have lots of sooty palomino and a few pangere chestnuts.
Haflingers are typically flaxen pangere chestnuts and palomino. Are you wanting to stay true to that or only breed for the darker ones?

  • If halfingers had cream wouldn't we see cremellos?

  • Personally I think chestnut with no sooty or dp, with hom recessive flaxen and hom pangare in a cob body type would be best! With w20. They tend to have big white blazes and socks sometimes.

  • @DivineDreams yes, but since this person is looking for the closest in-Game color, not the accurate real life genetics, I’m offering this girl as an example of a possible base color.

  • Haflingers are flaxen chestnuts in real life. if there were palominos there would be cremellos and regular chestnuts in there, but the fact that both flaxen and chestnut are recessives it helps keep the breed with the uniformity
  • I love her, but it’s really what the OP thinks. I certainly prefer the richer dappled Gold I get with my S+ Choc Palominos, but then I prefer the extreme colors across the board...all of my lines except my multi-dilute line are super saturated—silver black Macchiato, DP S+ chestnut/pali, DP bay, DP silver bay...the only thing I seem to chase consistently is dapples!
  • @Cheers i hope i didnt step on your toes! I am so sorry! I got carried away with genetic details! Yes I think you're horse is very good close example!

  • She would look good with s+ but I don't have the 20-40gmts available to do so :(
@kaitybrak let me know what you think.
Will keep trying to find one similar :D

  • Real life Haflingers definitely don't have cream, they are flaxen chestnuts with pangare, even they get a certain range of colour within that though

  • I've even seen them lighter and darker (but not quite liver) that kintara's picture show. Definitely mealy flaxen chestnut in various shades. I love the dapply ones, so s+ would be a neat addition. Maybe if you can't afford to gmt a foundation with s+, you could breed it in?

  • Perfect! Thanks. The first couple from Paradise Park are the closest. They are such a gold chestnut I'm having a hard time finding it. I originally thought the chocolate palomino might work. I'll see what I can find! As aside, my mare's official name is Considering Ruffian--who names a Haflinger after a racehorse??!?! I call her Ruffy...

  • Haflingers are wonderful! Rosie, the horse I am riding in my profile picture is an unregistered haflinger (her sire was registered and her dam was identified as a haflinger by a long time breeder, although if she ever was registered her papers were lost) that was bred by and belongs to the therapeutic riding program that I volunteer with. I used her dam in 4H one year and got to States in pony driving. I have known Rosie from the day she was born. She was one of the program's best horses for years, being equally good with the most disabled students and those who were able to ride independently, until she started having problems with her back when she was about 18. We gave her about a year off, then taught her to pull a cart. She picked it up like she had been doing it all her life.

She is a fairly dark chestnut, for a haflinger. Here is a closeup:
