What would you do - Stallion unable to produce INTACT offspring?
  • I was gifted through my first secret santa last year this Stallion. He has for four seasons now given me a trophy for the Appaloosa club so he's (presumably?) a good sire...except he has YET to produce anything intact (133 foals, and all come out snipped) .

What would you do with him?

  • I'd keep him to benefit my show herd.

That said, once you get to the *Star/*Gold level, it becomes increasingly more difficult to breed colts that are superior to their sire or even about as good as. I suspect the problem with him is that it is harder to cull mares by breeding ability because the Comparison Test for stallions is a lot finer sieve than anything we have available to test mares with. Ammit calls this "mare lag", and it affects all of us.

  • He's probably a higher Star, so that would make it hard to get intacts. The mares would have to be high Golds, which are hard to come by. He'd actually be perfect at producing some higher PT show horses, and great to keep for just that!

  • LOL...this is kinda cool then! I'll keep him going, and make bazillions in the show ring. He's an exceptional gift the, and I'll only put my gold mares to him in the future. Thanks for the answers!
  • Are you using SBA or BA? Full pasture bonus? If you really want intact foals, maybe just run BA if you usually run SBA? The foals that pass will still be good, just not "cream of the crop". But i'd keep trying him with the best mares I had with a full pasture bonus if possible. Like said above, he isn't the issue, it's the mares. Their quality isn't quite as good as his.

  • @Haltanny - It's the mares - Full pasture bonus plus SBA - no one intact. He's awesome alright ;) ;)
  • Use him for bootstrapping. Nothing wrong with him, the mares just aren't up to snuff.

  • Like the others said, use him for bootstrapping. Breed him, BA the colts but not the fillies (I like to run them through all the other testing though). Turn testing off the fillies so you don't accidentally BA them and they get snipped, then breed them back to dad when they're old enough and repeat until you get half of the colts pass BA. Then start BAing the fillies

  • Yeah, your issue is definitely not him being poor quality, it’s your mares not being up to his standards. This is a good problem to have. Bootstrap away!
  • Thanks everyone!
