PT and Paper
-
I'm back to bug ya'll again..atleast its not a DP question this time. I'm going through some of my keeper foals from this season and noticed large differences in PT to Paper score and was wondering how they rank against each other. ex is my 9.80 blue filly better or worse than my 10.80 blue? Almost (if not all) are bred out of foundations.
first two of my boys both scored 10.50 but one is B and the other A how did they get different papers with the same score?

Ive got several more Red fillies higher pointed than two of the Blue papered -
The simple answer to your question is that PT score is a signal to how quickly a horse will add to its show score with training and how far up the showing levels it will go before leveling off. PT score has no bearing on breeding ability. Paper levels are a somewhat looser signal of breeding ability--looser in that there are 5 levels of breeding ability for each gender and PT scores are measured in tenths of a point from 0 or less to 14 or 15 in HaJ1.
A foundation can have a PT score of 3.2, for instance, and yet be a high C or Yellow paper or even, if an exceptional producer a B or Red. Here is the exceptional producer with the lowest PT score in my barn. Her PT score is 2.0; her Average Foal PT score for 2 foals is 10.7

A foals PT is more indicative of the parents quality than their own quality.
You want to see a progression in the AFPT compared to the parents PT score -
Thank you @Bandit1119 I had thought the two were connected more than that I'm so glad that's cleared up in my head now!

also PT tells you approximately how long they’ll train for. Once they level off they continue to train they just don’t earn the same amount towards increasing their show score.
A horse usually levels off around the time their age matches their PT score.
The 9.8 mare will probably level off around the 3rd week after she turns 9, the 10.8 will be around the same time the next month. The boys at 10.5 will probably level off a week before the second mare. (Approximately. There is some wiggle room as to when the label switches from training to levelled off)
Also high PT is not necessarily an indicator of a good show horse. You can have a high PT and be a crappy shower or a low super star.
It’s best to have a range of PT’s.
Low PT’s earn less per training session so they stay in a level longer and may become competitive at that level before moving up. They may not train as long or get as high in the show levels but they often earn quite a few points along the way.
High PT’s earn more per training session so they tend to rocket through the levels and don’t really stop to smell the roses or collect points. They do reach higher show levels with bigger classes so they can earn lots of points once they reach the top.Thanked by 1Lallyhop
