What is Doctor Who?
  • I have never really heard this before? I was wondering where it came from? The back story on it.
  • Doctor Who is a very popular British sci-fi show. My brother and his best mate watch it :D
    Been going since 1960 something
Think there are a few movies as well? I watched a bit of it but never got super into it. :)

  • What is doctor who? (Can someone get the chalk board?) Apparently we have over 50 years of television history to educate you on. (JK unless someone else wants to jump in. I'm only knowledgeable on doctors 9-11 out of 12 (almost 13)) Any specific questions to orient this? Whovians are known to be a bit scatter brained at times. If not, don't blink, grab the nearest fez, resist upgrading, don't wander off and remember the Sonic doesn't work on wood. This is going to be fantastic!
  • I've been told the original doctor who was an educational show teaching children about history and science through time travel. We have The Doctor, a member of an alien race known as Gallifrayan (I'm sure I'm causing heart attacks with my spelling, sorry whovians!) Also known as the time Lords. This time lord has a Time And Relative Dimension In Space machine (TARDIS) that allows him to travel the universe time traveling, often bringing various companions with him as he figures things out, sorts out time errors and saves the universe.
Doctor who was cancelled for a few years, starting again with "new who" with the Ninth doctor. This is a more modern show, more focused on friendship and lots of dealing with emotions. It pics up with the doctor after "The Time War" in which he thought he was the only survivor, but it appears members of the race who waged war on his people still survives. Doctor who then shows the doctor going on zany adventures saving the world and the humans (the closest surviving thing to his people) trying to convince himself that there is still good left in him, though in the midst of all that he is still kind and is trying to help others, though there are times he is better than at others. This might sound a bit grim, though it actually is really fun. It's all "timey-wimey wibbley-wobbley" and "who shoots a steston?!?!" "Of coarse this isn't Narnia! That is much bigger than this, and has faries. Faries are cool."

  • Ninth doctor is my favorite, but one of my favorite episodes is when Eleventh doctor visits Vincent Van Gough and tries to teach him what people think of his work today (and tries to prevent a different alien from killing the painter...)
My hom GP boy, The Oncoming Storm is named in honor of the ninth doctor.

  • Oh, major thing I forgot to mention. I keep on talking about "different doctors" this is referring to the fact that to escape death, Time Lords can regenerate, leaving with a different actor portaying them, different nuances to the personality, though for the most part the core values and memories are the same. the number of doctor refers to the reincarnation.

  • Yep, Wildland got it! It's a super awesome show. I started watching reruns when I was like 6 or something. So I was delighted when it came back. Then it the past 3 years ago it became very very popular. No matter who you go up to they understand the reference. I'm kinda like "na na na! I was watching doctor who YEars before you!" It's one of the only shows I know that has really bridged the age gap. A 10 year old boy was dressed up as doctor who on my trick o treat street. Ive worn a doctor who shirt in CA and met some British ladies in their 60s who were happy to talk to me about doctor who for an hour. I personally love the David Tennant one. They've all been male until this last one which we haven't gotten any episodes about yet. Wasn't a fan of the directing for the last season or two. Don't remember it being covered, but he has two hearts. Hence his heart beat being a rhythm of four. There's actually a multi part episode about the Master (the only ever time lord that still exists) that also goes a lot on the two rhythm of the hearts.

One of my favorite songs. It's from a real episode. It's Christmas themed. It kinda has a Scrooge ruining Christmas character.

  • Oh yay! We got rid of TV so wonder how I'm gonna figure out how to watch it.

  • I buy the season on Amazon and watch it on my computer. That means I have to wait an extra day to see it, so I won't be able to see the Christmas Special until tomorrow :( But it does mean that I can re watch every episode (since the re boot at least) any time I want!

HUSG I got rid of my TV about 3 years ago...it's been wonderful!

  • Thanks for asking this as I've never understood the reference either!
  • I'm excited about Doctor Who, but I like the current doctor, I didn't life Christopher Eclaston. Matt Smith was my all time favourite though.
Doctor Who is so massive in the UK, so much so that whenever a new doctor is announced it's announced all over the news for weeks. And this last regeneration was even bigger being that we are getting our first female doctor.

  • @NorthernStars, I've seen Torchwood and thought it was good until they went to a six episode miniseries format. It just felt like they were trying to draw out the problem faced so it dragged too much for me. I'd say it's only worth watching the first 3-4 seasons if you haven't seen any of it.
  • I likedTorchwood until the Miracle Day series, too. It messed up the timeline for the whole franchise, and that is saying something considering all the convolutions in Doctor Who! I only watched a couple episodes of SJA, and just the first one of Class. Class looks pretty good, and I just didn't have time to watch all of the SJAs.

  • Love Dr Who - in fact I've just watched the Christmas special on tv :) Because it's been going since the 1960s with just a short break it has become a bit of a British institution/tradition.
  • Here's a quickie intro to Doctor Who. It's from 2013 so there have been some updates, but it does give a good background/explainations.

  • @ChilliFireFarm I loved todays episode especially the bit near the end, I can't wait until the new season starts.

  • Eeeeeek! NO SPOILERS!

One of my "must See" spots when we went to Wales 2 years ago was The Doctor Who Experience, and every filming location along our route!

  • Don't worry I won't spoil it, I've just come home to Scotland this June after spending 3 years in Wales at university, I never made it to Cardiff though as I was up in middle Wales, I did drive through once whilst going to stay with my aunt in Bristol.
