4th generation, B papered
-
Maybe it's a stupid question, but how bad is that?
I know all the basic things about papering and in my lines I try to keep only horses of good quality (at least Red/B in 2nd gen, I don't have many 3rd gen ones so I still haven't decided how strict I should be).
I'm just wondering if Red papered 4th gen stud can produce quality foals. Please help :)understand the significance of signatures -
Personally I look for A/Blue by third gen but if he comparison tests better than his sire then it's still an improvement.
It completely depends on what you look for in your lines. -
Kalilm is right, it all depends on what you prefer in your lines. T
That being said, most people prefer at least an A/Blue by 4th gen. I won't accept B/Reds in anything past 2g. -
His sire is A papered and his dam is Red. Must be a "higher B" if he passed BA.understand the significance of signatures

Personally I'd never keep a B paperered gen4, it's usually not that hard to get A papered stallions by gen3
Especially if the sire is A papered, I mean ideally you'd want him superior to that to improve your lines. If you aren't trying to improve then it doesn't really matter what he is though -
Well, he is a Secret Santa guft and a het nexus. I'm wondering how good could be his foals if in future I breed him with a 4th gen mare of better quality. (From my breeding lines I have two 2nd gen A papered colts, so some A's in 3rd and 4st gen are almost certain.)
Thanks for help! I will see what can I do with him.understand the significance of signatures -
Some people are more lenient with special genes, nothing wrong with that. If he passed SBA, then he should be pretty close to his sire's quality (likely high B with low A sire). I would probably breed him to a group of mares a couple times and see what he produces. I'd bet he'd produce A/Blue easy and you can be more strict with his sons, keeping only the very best one(s). If nothing else, you can get some pretty show ponies. :)#28036Thanked by 1kintara

I have only basic upgrade and I cannot use SBA. Not sure if the former owner used it.
Some time will pass until I breed any 4th gen mares to breed with him. But I'll try :Punderstand the significance of signatures -
I'll make exceptions for special genes if I pick up a horse that's a higher gen but not where I like their quality.
If you worry about even gens, you can just find other lower quality higher gens to breed him to, like 4th gen red mares.
If you don't care about even gens, you can just breed him to any red mares for the best chance of intact foals and cull them the way you would any other foals of a B/Red pairing.
I have a few lines that I've allowed to not be at the same place as their generation should be but that I basically just treat like they're a lower generation. Really it depends on what you want from that line - it won't progress as fast as other lines - like, your 6th generation from that line won't be as high a quality as a 6th generation that eliminated Bs in the 2nd or 3rd generation, but progress isn't the only thing to go after here. You can still get quality foals from him.Thanked by 1pinestables -
My ultimate goal is to breed better lines, of course. However, I'm just now getting to breeding my first round of Gen 4 mares, so I've come to accept it's going to take time to get my lines strong enough to be that picky.
Rather then setting hard and fast papering rules, I've adopted a "keep the best that represents my breeding goal" policy. If I breed a stallion with the gene I want, and it passes SBA, I'll keep it regardless of the paper level. If I breed a stallion with the same gene who papers higher, I snip the first stallion when the replacement reaches breeding age.
So, if I were in your shoes, I'd keep a Gen 4 B-papered stallion if he was what I was looking for and I didn't have better. I'd keep that stallion intact until I bred an A-papered replacement.Thanked by 1pinestables -
If it's a special gene I'd use him then. So I'd use all G4 blue mares to try and bring up the quality of foals. Less intacts but hopefully you'll get a a few keepersThanked by 1pinestables
