Closed gene horses questions
-
So I got two horses from my ss that I'd like to learn more about.
The first is a gelding with the superscript M/ on the splash gene. What closed gene is this?
937386
The second is a nexus spay. I have a couple of these and was curious about how these are bred. They have normal coat colors with starring patterns. Does a homozygous nexus exhibit this? I always thought they were base colors (red, blue, etc..) Can someone explain a little more please? -
The gelding has what is called splash M. It is a closed gene that was released earlier this year. You can only own intact splash M breeding stock if you own a foundation horse with splash M.
Nexus is a little different. Nexus is an open gene that produces star like patterns on the coat. You only need one copy of nexus for the stars to appear. Hom nexus horses will turn a blueish color. The horses that you see with bright base colors (red, blue, yellow) are axiom horses. Axiom is also a closed gene and follows the same rules as Splash M.
Hopefully this helps a bit.
