Wild Bay herd question
  • I started a herd of wild bays and they are turning out wonderful. I decided I wanted to inject some DP into the herd in a bid to get some possible blood bays so i used my Liver Stud on them. Most of the offspring seemed to miss the DP entirely. Two missed the wildbay but seemed to get hit harder with the darkening genes than the others.

My question is this. Since they missed the wild bay gene, should I remove them from the wild bay herd so as to keep it somewhat pure and take a another shot at it this season with my liver stud, Or, do I keep them in and hope that they help at a little in producing some blood bays? I'm sure they both missed the DP as well but would the present darkening genes help any?

  • It would probably be best to get some hom wild bay mares, and then breed them to your liver boy. Or find a hom dp liver that someone wouldn't mind you using. That way the foals will always have a copy of the wild bay gene, and a copy of dp.

With these ones you'd be trying to start the line at 2nd gen. And how long would you let non wild bay mares stay in the herd, so long as they may have dp? 3rd gen? 4th gen? It's best to be strict on your culling, in my opinion, even if it is by colour.

  • Timber, I sent you a couple of straws from this guy. He is hom for wild and sty. He does not carry Dp. :)

  • I have a 2g stud that is hom DP (and hom sty) and has A+. If you breed to hom E mares, you'll be guaranteed a wild bay (or brown) het DP foal. Brown foals could be gmt'd to wild bay. I can put him up for stud in my buddy chat, if interested.

  • I think Dapper Dan may have gotten the DP, if that matters at all.
  • I have a liver stud who carries A+. If you're interested in straws, let me know.
  • @cheers I was leaning on Dapper Dan having the DP but my eyes aren't as trained on DP in bays.
@haltanny I'd like to take a gander at him. I'm always looking for new blood and that sounds like what I'm looking for.
@devilsparadise I'd like to take a look at yours too. Even if it isn't this season I can do it next season with a straw.

Not sure when ill be getting back on to reply. We've been eyeballing our weather apps all day because of a possibility of being hit with a snow storm. I'm appreciating the input from y'all a lot.

Here's my guy. I usually charge 5k per straw for him.

This guy is only 2, but he's double DP, so you'd be guaranteed to get DP on your babies. He does have frame, though. I'd probably charge 3k for his, when I can get some.
  • @cheers - I went to the examples of DP thread and compared him to several of the confirmed het DP stysty bays and he does match them so I think you might be right. I will be keeping him.

W G2 Set Us Up The Bomb was not so lucky but I do have a few stallions she may go well with so I'll find something to do with her.

@haltanny and @devilsparadise I will pass on them at this time. However I may approach you for straws or stud in the future since I do have mares that would go perfect with those guys.

Thanks for the help. I'm gonna go watch the snow and contemplate how I'm going to use my time while trapped inside.
