Is this just lucky?

So I got an A papered Colt out of a B stallion and Yellow mare.. does this happen much? The mare had the full pasture bonus, so is this the factor that decided the foal to be A papered or is it just luck of the draw?

When using pastures is it a little easier to get an intact foal from uneven papered parents?
I don't really like to breed unevenly, but my pasture mares are a mix of yellows and reds, should I expect the yellow mares bred to my B stallions to usually have altered foals?
Thanks for any clarification y'all! :xBreeder of Quality Warmbloods and Show Horses

Hey, that's great! I bet if she hadn't had the full bonus he'd be a B. I would expect the Yellow/B crosses to have a higher chance of altering, but really it might not be a huge difference.Thanked by 1KAMRanch

All of my Foundation pastures are a mix of Yellow and Red. My foundation boys are a mix of C and B. I get about a 50% pass rate on SBA in all of my Foundation pastures, regardless of whether the boys are Bs or Cs. I probably get a 5-10% A/Blue rate from my Foundation pastures (90% or more of my mares will have the full pasture bonus). It’s closer to 10% if my boys are Bs, closer to 5 if they are Cs...
I haven’t specifically paid attention to intact rates between Yellow and Red mares, but I will say I have Yellow mares with AFPTs well over 10.4 or 10.5 in pastures with B stallions. -
It's not unheard of, but not very common either. I got an A from a B/yellow breeding today, but I was hand breeding through ET :)Thanked by 1KAMRanch

I got my first Blue mare out of a yellow mare and a B stud. Congrats :)Thanked by 1KAMRanch

I got a blue papered mare out of an A stud and a random create. I think I just got lucky. I ended up selling her though.Thanked by 1KAMRanch

I don't really consider B papered foundations to yellow papered foundations uneven, they are both foundations, yes ability is a bit uneven but it just brings up the quality of the yellow mares! It's very much the way I like to play, my stallions are often a step ahead of my mares, it means the next generation should be better than the mares after SBA! Matching breeding ability makes it harder to improve.
In answer to your question, no it's not that common to get A/blues from B/yellow or C/red but I certainly get a few every season. I love it when I do! -
That is because you are doing a mini bootstrap. It becomes MUCH harder to improve not matching ability once you get higher up in ability.

Yes true, it's harder to know where the higher ability horses are too as they are just all Golds. In the lower gens it's just an easier way to say get blue papered gen3's, if I use an A papered gen2
