Does his offspring have DP?
  • image
    2g Princes Star

    I am pretty sure he is at least het DP because he produced what looks like several wild bay foals?
  • I'm not an expert with wild bay, but here goes:

    I don't believe he carries DP. His dam did, so there's a chance, but having wild bay foals does not make him DP. In my experience, wild bay (A+) goes bright red when no sooty alleles are present with or without DP.

    All of his red, wild bay foals that are genetically tested only carry one copy of sooty, which doesn't lead me to believe he carries DP despite them appearing more red than the wild bay foals that have two copies of sooty.

  • Princes Star has no DP, and therefore he has not passed DP to any of his offspring. I will send you the link to a good discussion of DP and sooty in wild bay in the next comment. Wild bay is a somewhat unusual in its expression of sooty and DP.
  • He does not have DP because you get that matte brown color when you have a wild bay (A+) with sooty. If he were to have DP he would turn into a bright red color, like a blood bay. Here are some examples to help.

    Wild bay, hom sooty, het DP

    Hope this helps!
  • Then is a wild bay? Just with no DP? I like the wild bay offspring.
  • He's just a sooty wild bay, they're red if they have DP.

    His mom however, has one copy of DP which is easily seen since she's red.

    Hom DP is closer to this colour;

    She's a little lighter than hom since she has silver.
