Have you applied for your 2 show horses from available to adopt? Also you can pick up an extra amount of money and another barn from the welcome package.

Once you get going in the game, usually your foals (papered well and passed testing) will get you enough money each season to keep rolling. However in the beginning you are likely going to rely on show ponies and show bonuses to get you money. Be sure to get your welcome pack like Dinascar said-- it helps!
Always be sure to keep an eye out for rank 5 herd helpers or rank specials, even if you don't want them, you can always create them and sell them for a decent price. -
Yes! Be sure you go to the top of the forum discussion page and say hello to get your welcome pack! Apply for show horses, join any contests and games on the forum, and enter your horses in shows (be sure to train them first!) so they can start earning money for you.

The contests from people like Bandit are lifesavers -- definitely scan the forum and find them! It more than doubled my daily income, which was very helpful my first month (before I gave in and upgraded ;D ).
