Even Breeding Question
  • When doing even breeding, how do you work the second gen quality RS and ExPros into your lines? Do you act as if that’s gen1 like everyone else, or do you allow them to act as a gen2, and their offspring is a gen3, and just have a slight unevenness based on breeding quality?

Example: This filly has a typical C/yellow foundation parents, so she’s your normal gen2 since she passed SBA.

This colt has a B papered RS for a sire, and an ExPro for a dam. His parents are second gen quality, so would you count him as third gen? Or would he still be a second gen regardless?

  • I go by how many horse pictures show up on the pedigree. I think that's the most common practice.

  • Treating them as everyone else makes a pretty pedigree, but unless your entire line is from B/Red foundations you may find them producing a lot of alters.

Maybe attempt an elite line where
    G1: B/Red G2: A/Blue ect....

If your g2 just papers B/Red, it can fall back to your non-elite line and still be useful.

  • I always go with parents from both B/Red as 3rd gen not 2nd gen and write them down as such - Ammit told us paper was more important than gen :)
I also expect them to produce either very high red/B or more commonly A/blue.
A pretty pedigree looks nice but not when you have 3rd gen A stallions with low 3rd gen red mares together.
Now we can paper it is much easier to get the same quality together. :)
  • The idea of naming things is to make it easier for you to work out who to breed them to at a glance so put down what will help you. That colt looks like he may be as good as sire so could be called 2nd gen anyway - if he came out as A I would suggest 3rd gen would be closer to his quality.
Breeding foals of similar quality makes it easier to pass BA (and SBA) as there is less variation in what the foal can be and stops us going backwards in quality :)
Ultimately others (and you) can look at your pedigree to see what gen the horse is.
  • Thank you everyone, was just curious how people handled mixing the ExPros and their offspring into their lines.
  • Personally I use the ExPros with my red mares or B papered stallions. I've started to not pay attention to breeding evenly anymore the last 6 months or so, so I wouldn't call it breeding evenly by any means to go that route.

I think that most people who want to strictly breed evenly only breed ExPro to ExPro or ExPro to regular foundation (likely to produce lots of spays/gelds) and then the resulting foals would be considered 2nd gen.

  • I’ve been keeping my ExPros and B/red RS together, since they are equal breeding quality. It was more a question of what generation would I incorporate the offspring back into the main line, if they should get incorporated back at all.
  • And I know, it’s my line my decision, but for the salability of any offspring from the line was my main concern.

  • I've been wondering about this too, so thanks for asking! It was the reason I was so confused at first -- people seemed so keen on even breeding but it was hard to get a handle on what it WAS, especially with a free or Basic account.
  • It doesn't help that there are two meanings that people seem to use the term for.

    •Equal Quality Breeding
------A gen4 can cross with a gen3 if they have equivalent papers.

    •Pretty Pyramid Pedigree Breeding
    ------A gen3 only crosses with other gen3

  • I call them what their actual generation is. I breed my gen 1 expros to my gen 1 expros and my gen 1 perfects to my gen 1 perfects but they're all still called and labled gen 2. In gen 2 I match the colors the same way. Sometimes I get them mixed up and they get culled. Sometimes they pass. If they pass they're whatever generation they were born into and their paper level and I breed them to their paper within that generation.

  • I mix all my foundations. With pasture breeding this helps to keep my number of intact foals steady. I also don't WANT a huge number of intact foals, only the best of the best. Most if my foundations are all RS, expro, ExPer, perfect foundations, etc. So they're all similar in quality. I like a pretty pedigree, and it's also not hard to breed even quality in the lower gens. I'm just starting into 5th and 6th gen, but with them I'm not concerned with matching generation. Star to gold papered is all I care about at that point.
  • I like a pretty pedigree but I also really like narrowing down my choices when it comes time to match them up. Breeding them within their generations cuts down some of the decision making.
