Yup! If a chestnut is double sooty (or a palomino double sooty) and liver does not pop up in the name (or for the palomino, chocolate), then it is not DP. Champagne and a few other genes (like gray) do hide dp.

This guy actually has a liver filled line! His grandsire on his dam's side is hom dp, so his dam is het dp. On his sires side, his grandsire is a liver. Due to his sabino, we can't see if he is hom dp as well, and I bring this up because both of that horses' parents are het dp. However I do not know for sure if his sire is dp himself as not only is he a bay, but a silver bay at that.

So your boy is a confirmed het dp! You could do some experiments to see whether he is hom dp. The most expensive would be to get the gmts together and to try and change his dp genes to have both. The least but more time consuming would be to breed him to dark chestnut mares (hom sooty) and see how many of his offspring are livers. However if you do that, half of them will be champagne.

Thanks for the help. I have a few hom sooty mares, I think I'll try him out on. When I bought him, I also bought a liver paternal brother of his and didn't realize it til later lol. Now I have three studs I know will throw DP into the mix, one I'm almost for sure is het, but this guy and his brother I figured I'd ask. Still sorting out my mares to see who will match best with who color wise and slightly bootstrapping.

A kings love is only het dp. Livers that are hom dp will appear black or close to it

This is the sires full brother who is hom DP. So your guys sire has every chance of also being hom also. In which case if he is then you guy has a higher chance of being hom dp

I bred Bold Advisor to a few more mares. Wound up with 3/6 being livers, the other three have Ch or Silver working on them so I can't tell what they have going on lol. I'm feeling pretty good about what he's throwing though!
