How do you tell if snowflake appy?
  • Which genes is it that determines it's a snowflake appy?
  • Snowflake is 'hidden', the gene doesn't get listed in the horse's DNA color profile. Most players just refer to it as SNF.

  • Thank you, Been trying to figure it out..
  • In order for a horse to be snowflake and display the trait, it would need to be born from two parents that are either homozygous for the gene, one homozygous and one heterozygous, or get lucky and have two heterozygous parents both pass the snowflake gene down. It’s also only visible on Appaloosas, so any horse that misses the Appaloosa gene but came from snowflake Appaloosa parents could carry the gene. The only way to know for sure if your Appaloosa horse is a snowflake is to try to register it in the snowflake breeders club.

Snowflake can only be GMT’d onto foundation horses when the gene is for sale in the GMT lab. Currently it is not for sale,

  • I don't really study the appaloosas in any depth, I'm hoping keeping the thread bumped up will draw in someone who knows more.
I know the horse needs to have hom SNF and at least het Llp to express snowflake spotting. Sometimes other markings can hide it or mimic it, so attempting to enter the horse in the snowflake breeder's club is a way of checking. But I don't think there's any way to know if a horse is het SNF unless they have a known homozygous parent or hom offspring from a het x het mating.

  • Het snowflake won't show at all - it'll look like any other horse because the snowflake's recessive.

  • And it hasn't been mentioned but random creates have the chance to be het snowflake, even hom snowflake but it's rare.. I only last season found out one of my rank specials is het sf and he is in his teens!

So some people can go generations before finding out they have one in their lines then they need to go tracing them back to figure out the carrier.

  • A horse doesn't even have to be created with Llp. A solid color or any other pattern can randomly be carrying it--usually heterozygous.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
