would anyone like to "judge" my herd
  • I've been on HJ the original site for several years and I've been on HJ2 since October 2015. I know a beginners amount about genetics and think my herd is very mildly decent, but now I'm looking to get more into the game and need to step it up. If anyone would be so kind as to judge y herd for me that'd be fantastic.

I usually color test, consistency tests and geld\spay advice but I do not have an upgraded account so I can't do all of the fancy papers (sadly)

This is also my first time posting on the forum so if I did something wrong, just yell and I'll fix it lol

  • What's your ID so we can enter it into the search? :)
Sorry, that link just goes to mine. :P
  • Color a word of advice, breed evenly. Most breeders dont care but me im very strict about how i breed

  • And what do you mean by "breed evenly," and your colt looks amazing!
I see a few different patterns in his pedigree that could be considered "even"

Right now most of my herd is foundations or 2nd gen

  • When you look at his pedigree, each horse has the same number of ancestors as their vertical neighbors. :) A lot of your horses have a foundation parent on one side and a long string of parents on the other side. If you're looking for breeding quality, than breeding even generationed horses is the way to go, but if you're breeding for showing quality, I've heard that uneven horses show better. :) Ultimately, it's your choice. It's not a rule on the server, but a lot of people won't buy or breed to uneven horses. :) Keep doing the free testing and you'll be fine. :D
  • That's really interesting actually, I never even thought of that. I usually try to breed for color and what I think would be a good showing horse. I'll definitely straighten out my lines though. I've been debating on which ones I want to get rid of and which ones I want to keep for showing\breeding so once I've decided I'll start breeding evenly.

My main problem with breeding is hat I get super excited about what the combination of two horse will create and I breed them before actually thinking about it

  • Cool. :D It'll mean pretty much starting completely over, but if you need some more breeders, Herd Helpers are very helpful for getting more specific colors. High quality breeders, if more common colors, can be found in owner #13, which automatically pulls perfect foundations from the Yum Yum co. :D Good Luck!
  • Gotta do what you gotta do lol I'll probably keep my two favorite mares and one stallion. The rest are the best quality anyway.

I have another question if you don't mind, I got a "perfect foundations" from the herd helper (my stallion, Fancy) what is the best way for me to start a good line from him? Should I use other foundation mares or should I get some mares with a pedigree?

Most of my horses came from the herd helper but they were mostly bought for color. I actually have 3 mares that I also got from the perfect foundations herd helper

  • Breeding even means you breed foundation to foundation, 2nd generation to 2nd generation, 3rd generation to 3rd generation, etc. So you would breed your perfect foundation to foundation mares. Every new horse you create is a foundation. Every foal from 2 foundations is a second generation :)

You can keep a few of you uneven horses just geld or spay them instead of using them as breeders. sometimes they make awesome show ponies.

Also, @baya most of us DO care about breeding evenly lol
  • I've had the best results when I breed one perfect foundations to another. Or even just another foundation horse, but I've had some great offspring from two perfect foundations.

Anything goes of course! That's just what I've found to work best :)

  • Thank you so much guys! This has help me so much. I'll keep my foundations in tact and geld\spay any others I decide to keep and go from there.
You've all been very helpful, thanks again

  • You can breed how you want to breed. I take into account a horse's show record, if it has a good show record, and is uneven, I will buy it for show. I am upgraded, and can do that. Uneven isn't a big thing for me for a show horse. That is how I make hbs in the game. I make A Lot of hbs from my showing bonus each week. If you want to breed for quality breeders, and not volume of altered show horses, then breed even.
  • Agree with Paints... if you're just starting out with foundations or even 2nd gen and you can get your hands on a quality higher gen stallion to breed to, it can make you some excellent show ponies. Building up your show string will eventually keep your stable self-funding.

  • Hi Color. I've been playing on this server about as long as you. While the advice you've gotten so far is good, I'm wondering what you want out of your herd? Do you want it to be self sustaining--so that you can breed without needing to buy hbs? Do you want to breed the prettiest horses for sale to other players? Do you want to breed really top quality horses maybe in plainer colors? Do you just want a barn full of shiny, showy patterned ponies for your own personal enjoyment?

Your goals will help you decide what new horses to buy in/create, which foals to keep and where you should invest your hbs. If you want to be self sustaining, I would highly recommend a 3 pronged approach.

1--keep that perfect foundation sire. Breed him to a few of your top foundation generation mares (other perfect foundations or rank specials if you have them) and also put him up for public stud. Sell or keep the resulting foals depending on what your other goals are.

2--pick some of your other favorite mares, especially those pretty patterned girls that may be uneven generations, and breed them to upper generation stallions. Often upper level players will make nice stallions available at very low breeding fees specifically for the creation of show ponies (with the promise from you that you will alter all the foals and not use them for breeding). Take those foals (and their moms and all your other horses) and show them as much as you can (remember to train everyone once a week and show them twice a week after training). Build up that show bonus!

3--if you have any mares left over, either sell them or put them up for public breeding. You might make a note on the page of any that are unevenly bred. The rest of us are often looking for mares to use as recipient mares with embryo transfers and the evenly bred girls are likely to be used for trying out young or new stallions. This is a good way to use mares you don't have the room or inclination to breed to make you extra money.

This plan could be a good one for a season or two while you figure out the rest of your goals too!
  • Mostly I just want some pretty show ponies. I haven't figured out which of my mares are the best in producing good showing foals so far they all seem to do pretty good. They've all only been bred once or twice.

If I breed to a stallion out side of my barn I always try to get studs that have a good showing record and a pretty coat. I haven't made any big decisions yet since last posting here. I think I'm going to thin the herd just a bit, run a few more tests and then I'm going to try getting serious. I don't have any need fore a massive herd, I just want a self sustaining one.

Thanks for all the extra comments and advice guys. You've been a huge help :)
