GP GMT question
  • I think it must be because he already has it from the parent that could have passed it on. Anyway, you probably don't want to, because he's only a C, and even if you don't want to breed the top-est evar foals, you probably don't want to spend a GMT on a foal who's only as good as his sire. :/
  • I actually don't think you can GMT either kp or gp onto lined horses, even if the parents carry it. But don't quote me on that.

  • Can you GMT missed hidden genes onto foals? I wasn't aware that was an option, I thought you could only do that to foundations that meet the requirements.....
  • I don't think you can GMT lined horses either. I think I tried it once, and it didn't work. I was trying to change the lined horse's base color though. But as someone else said, it may be because the horse already has the hidden GP gene you are trying to add.
  • OK, I know the sire is het GP, and the mare is a foundation, so I doubt she has it. Wouldn't there still be the opportunity to add at least one more copy of GP?

I'm gonna put my money on the 'you can only GMT GP onto foundation horses' theory, I think.

  • Yes, and you can't add new genes to lined horses anyway. :)
  • Dena--

You can only add new genes to foundation horses aged 5 and under with no living foals. For them, you can add any gene you want from the list.

For lined horses, you can only add genes they missed out on from their parents, not add anything totally new. So this foal could never be more than heterozygous GP because his mom is definitely not GP.

I have never tried to add a hidden gene to my foals that they might have missed out on, so I don't know if it is something that you can do. My GP and KP foundations are homozygous and it's just not occurred to me to try to GMT it onto a gen 3 with two heterozygous parents. I do GMT my foals fairly regularly--especially removing frame from colts, to eliminate that lethal white issue.

Does anyone know definitively whether you can add GP or KP to a lined horse that descends from heterozygous GP or KP parents?
