DP help in brown?
-
Sorry guys, really need to not be adding to the DP posts, but...
I still have a really hard time differentiating between brown and het dp brown. Her mother had a filly with it, so had to be het even though said mother is black. I'm wondering if I should hang onto the mother even though I am not certain of if her quality meets the standard for my bootstrapped gals at the moment, of if this girl has DP to pass on. Really mainly trying to bring out DP more in my bootstrap herd. Anyone with experience with browns have any guesses?

I doubt it. Generally with hom Sooty bays and browns, you usually see dapples if dp is present.Thanked by 1Wildland Acres

Dapples are not a 100% guarantee, though.
For browns, I've found that looking at the belly is the way to go for comparing how light/dark they are, though it's still really difficult.
Her dam's dam is hom DP, so her dam is het DP for sure. 50/50 chance of having it. From the color, I think she might.
The best way to tell for sure would be to test breed her to a hom sooty hom wild bay stud, that for sure isn't DP, so you could see if the foal came out with DP.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
I lean to yes, but I am pretty terrible at dp in brown too :D Here are two of my Ata StySty browns by the same sire who is het for dp. The one I know isn't dp looks much lighter/redder highlighted than yours.

I used to breed for brown dp so I'll see if I can round up some examples for you

Stysty no dp, I know his patterns cover him up but yiuxan still see how muted the res is compared to no sooty, no do. But it's much more ornate than my hom sooty het dp

Stysty het dp (from sire)

Your filly is right between my sooty and dp horses. I think it's safe to say shes het dp.----

Thanks friends. I decided to try putting dp on one of her foals I was gmting anyway since so many people thought she probably had it and it took. Thanks everyone! The mystery is solved!

I have TONS of DP in all base colors. If you'd like to use some to bring in more DP, let me know what particulars, and I'll see what I have. Or look through my herd. Most with DP should have DP in the name.#28036
